habit.â
Frank shook his head. âNo, we got something else in mind. But first we got to locate a couple of items.â
âLike what items we talking about?â
âWell, what this cleaning lady should look for are, you know, color TVsââ
âYeah.â
âFur coats.â
âYeah.â
âWatches. Jewelry.â
âGo on.â
âSilverware maybe, you know, silver stuff. And firearms.â
Sportree grinned. âYou almost forgot to mention that. Any particular firearms you got in mind?â
âWell, like the kind you might find in the guyâs top drawer,â Frank said. âUnderneath his jockeys.â
âNo hunting rifles, anything like that.â
âNo, I had more in mind the smaller models you can hold in one hand.â
âPut in your pocket, or in your belt.â
âYeah, that kind.â
âYou remember my cousin LaGreta?â
âThatâs right, your cousin.â
âShe used to have big eyes. I can talk to her,â Sportree said. âSeems to me the rate was twenty bucks a house. I mean a house, you know, thereâs goods in it. She give you the plan, where everything is, twenty bucks.â
âThatâs fine,â Frank said. âTwenty dollars, if thatâs the going rate, fine.â
âSheâs with this Rent-A-Maid and also a catering service,â Sportree said. âWork parties, weddings, you understand? and does some cleaning jobs, too. She donât do floors, though. I remember her saying she donât do floors.â
âLong as she gets in the house,â Frank said, âI donât care what the fuck she does in there.â
âNice thing,â Sportree said, âshe gets around. You know, doesnât work for the same people all the time. That wouldnât be so good.â
âListen, that sounds fine,â Frank said. âIn fact itâs exactly what weâre looking for. If LaGretaâs got the eyes you say she has.â
âNice big eyes,â Sportree said.
âCan I ask you if sheâs on anything?â
âShe smoke a little, thatâs all. Vacuum that big house, clean the oven, polish the furniture, she like to visit friends and have a little something. But what she make you know, she ainât on any hard shit.â
âYou think you can set it up?â
âIâll talk to her. You give me your telephone number.â
Frank hesitated. âI better call you. Weâre in and out a lot. Maybe weâre not there when you call.â
Sportree said, âFrank, I hope you still the same person I used to be associated with.â His gaze moved to Stick. âJust as I hope your friend here is pure.â
âIâll tell you something,â Stick said to him. âI enjoyed the drinks, but I donât know a ratâs ass about you ei-ther, do I?â
It was the quiet way he said it that jolted Frank. He couldnât believe itâthe first time Stick even opened his mouth. Frank said, âHey, letâs not have any misunderstandings,â and looked over at Sportree.
âItâs all right,â Sportree said, his tone a little cooler than before. âYou call me in a couple of days. Maybe Iâll have something for you, maybe I wonât.â
When they were outside Frank said, âWhatâre you trying to prove? The guyâs doing us a favor, you come on like youâre some dangerous character.â
âAll I said was I didnât know him very well.â
âBut I do.â Frank was tense. âIâve known him a hell of a lot longerân Iâve known you. You donât like the way Iâm handling it, go back working cement, maybe Iâll see you around.â
âYouâre handling it,â Stick said. âYou made up the rules. It seems to me one of them, it says donât even tell a junkie your name. The first guy we talk to, it
