too.
“Avery,” he said tenderly, his hand still on my cheek. I reached out and took his hand in
mine, and we gazed into each other’s eyes for a long moment.
But then a hard knock came on his office
door, breaking the spell.
Cole pulled his hand from mine like it
was on fire.
He stood up quickly, picked up the plates
from the floor and set them on his desk. Then he grabbed the blanket and stowed it in the wardrobe in the corner.
I stood up and smoothed my jeans and
hair.
It wouldn’t do for whoever was at the
door to see Cole and I having a romantic picnic.
“Cole!” a male voice boomed from the
hallway.
“I told you,” I heard Kalia saying. “You can’t just show up here without a
schedule meeting. Mr. Buchanan is
-- ”
But the rest of her protest was drowned
out by more banging on the door.
As soon as Cole opened it, a man came
bustling in.
He was about thirty, with broad shoulders
and a chiseled jaw. His suit was
expensive, and he wore a heavy silver watch on his wrist.
Behind him came Kalia, a scowl pasted
across her delicate features. “I
told him not to bother you, Mr. Buchanan,” she said. “But as usual, he wouldn’t listen.”
The man ignored him, which made me
instantly like him. Any man who
wasn’t swayed by Kalia’s blond hair and hot body was okay in my book.
“Easton,” Cole said. “To what do I owe the honor?”
“What the fuck is going on?” the man,
Easton, fumed. “Why didn’t you
call me?”
    “Because you’re a corporate lawyer,
Easton, not a criminal attorney.”
I caught Kalia’s eye, and she shook her
head and looked away, dismissing me as useless.
“I know, but you need to tell me about
these things.” Easton ran his hand
through his hair. “We can fix
this, Cole, but it’s going to be tough. We need to make sure nothing else happens.”
“Nothing else is going to happen.”
“How the fuck did Jeffrey know all this?”
Easton demanded. “We were so
careful, Cole. The network was
supposed to be hack proof.”
Cole opened his mouth to answer, but
before he could, his phone buzzed with a text. He pulled it out of his pocket and looked down at the screen,
frowning.
“It’s from Jeffrey,” he said. “A video.”
As soon as the words were out of his
mouth, my heart began to pound, and my stomach tumbled into a somersault.
Cole hit the button to play the video,
and everything began to move in slow motion.
I couldn’t see the screen, but I could
hear it.
    My voice.
    The video.
Jeffrey had sent Cole the one thing I’d
never wanted anyone to see.
I grabbed the side of Cole’s desk. I tried to scream, “Stop!” but even
though my mouth was forming words, nothing was coming out.
Cole’s face went from confused to shocked
to horrified.
    “What is it?” Kalia asked.
    “Cole?” the lawyer, Easton,
demanded. “What is it?”
The walls felt like they were closing in
around me.
    And then everything went black.
