circumstances.
“Of course, I’m not gonna drink a whole pot by myself.” He chuckled finding her question silly.
She ignored this and turned swiftly back to the kitchen. After drinking her coffee alone, you could hear a pin drop in the house. She took it upon herself to start some breakfast. She normally wasn’t a breakfast person but she was starving and figured this might sweeten him up and get him to spill the beans. Six scrambled eggs and four slices of bacon later they were at the table, sitting opposite in silence again.
He had said thanks for breakfast as they were sitting down but not a word since. Not even a look. She was glaring at him, getting her first real good look at him, busting open with anger. She had had enough. If a slap across the face was what it took to get him to say something, that’s what it would have to be. This was it, she would have to start with the main question, the why.
He was handsome, very much so. Not in a movie star kind of way but he was pleasing to her eyes anyway. She hadn’t noticed that last night. He was tan and his arms were toned with brown hair that was long enough to tuck around his ears and forehead with blue eyes, real blue. He had thrown on some variant of the same t-shirt he wore last night just another color. The fact that he was cute did nothing for her but make her more angry. Why the heck did someone like him need to kidnap a girl anyway?
She wasn’t going to go another minute without some resolution of what was going on here.
She fought for the right words. She studied hard, her cheeks getting red as she thought and fumed. She ran her fingers through her ponytail with her eyes closed. Calm down. You’re not going to get anywhere if you just start yelling at him. Just ask him why he brought you here and what...Enough!!
“Why did you bring me here?” she almost yelled startling him.
He looked up into her eyes for the first time. He stared in stunned silence for a few seconds, which didn’t help Elena’s temper or frightfulness.
“Don’t you know?” he asked calmly. Elena huffed and held her breath. Had she heard him right? “Were you told nothing about what was your purpose here?”
He continued to stare into her eyes. She wanted to look away but it was so intense and she could let this go no longer.
“No, they didn’t tell me anything after they kidnapped me from my bus stop that night, threw me into a dirty van and carried me to a strange building where I had to strip in front of strange men,” he winced but she kept going, “and shower and sleep on the floor with fourteen other scared girls just as confused as me. They didn’t feed or talk to us and now I’m here and you aren’t telling me anything either,” Elena said on the verge of crying.
No! Remember your promise! Don’t let him enjoy your pain! She leaned back in her chair and crossed her arms, fearful of what he might do in response to her outburst. He leaned back into his chair too, never losing her gaze, sipped his coffee and set it back down. He clasped his hands together on the table in front of him and sighed before he spoke softly.
“Elena, you’re here to be my wife. As a matter of fact the minister will be here to marry us in a half hour.” He paused before going on, to see if she’d go into shock. When she said nothing he continued. “We live in a community of sorts. The people here are close knit and we watch out for each other and their wives. It’s sort of a tradition in these parts...to live like this. My father married my mother this way. The local government gets a cut and leaves us alone so don’t waste your time trying to call the police or run. I understand you’re confused and scared but...that doesn’t last forever. Soon, I would hope you would learn to be comfortable with your life here with me.”
She sat speechless. Unable to move, she had gotten the answers to her questions and no longer wanted to hear them. Reality set in. There would be no
