so stern!â
Of course â Henry Fonda!
As she and Ben Daniel formally shook hands, Jess found herself blushing. Oh, what a piece of nonsense, eh? Thinking Rustyâs boss was like a film star. She was relieved when Sally said they must be on their way, theyâd to have a quick sandwich before the girls arrived and it was matinee time.
âSeeing your first customers, eh?â Ben Daniel asked Jess with a smile. âOr patrons, as our Mr H likes us to call âem.â
âPatrons!â Sally echoed, shepherding Jess away. But Rusty was at the door.
âGood luck, Jess â shall we meet later?â
âSheâs got a lot on today,â Sally said firmly. âThanks, Ben! Jess, come on, then.â
âGoodbye, Rusty!â Jess called. âGoodbye, Mr Daniel.â
âCall me Ben!â he cried after her. âIâll show you round when we can fix it up.â
In the small staffroom where there were lockers and pegs and a washroom, Sally put on the kettle and opened up a packed lunch.
âI meant to tell you to bring a sandwich,â she told Jess, setting out cups. âBut Iâve brought enough for two, anyway. Canât afford to eat at the cafe every day, eh? Of course, when you start at one oâclock, you can have something at home, anyway.â
âFeel bad, taking your lunch, Sally.â
âNo, I told you, thereâs enough here for both of us. I should be cutting down anyway! Whatâll you have â cheese and chutney or ham?â
âSo glad Rusty got the job,â Jess remarked, choosing cheese and chutney. âWonder how heâll get on with Mr Daniel, though?â
âNow, he told you to call him Ben!â Sally made tea and poured it out. âOch, heâs noâ so bad. A bit tetchy at times, but then heâs got a lot of responsibility. If things go wrong in the projection room, thatâs it â no picture!â
âWhatâs his wife like, then? Another Mrs Hawthorne, forever worrying?â
âHeâs noâ married. Escaped so far, anyway, and he was thirty last birthday. Plenty of girls after him, of course. Some think he looks like Tyrone Power.â
âTyrone Power?â Jess frowned, as she considered a mental picture of another handsome, dark-haired actor. âI suppose he has a look of him. Maybe seems more serious.â
âThatâs what draws the girls,â Sally said lightly, then, as Jess raised her eyebrows, vehemently shook her head.
âHey, donât look at me! Iâm noâ chasing after Ben Daniel. Iâve got my own laddie and heâs all I want. Youâll meet my Arnold soon enough â heâs always dropping in. Works in an office up the Mound.â Sally passed Jess an apple. âHow about you, then? Anyone special?â
âNo one at all.â
âThink youâve got an admirer here, though.â
âWho?â
âWhy, Rusty, of course! Talk about sheepâs eyes!â
âSally, weâve only just met.â
âNeednât take long, to know what you feel.â
âWell, I donât feel anything.â Jess crunched her apple. âIâve enough on my plate, learning a new job.â
âThe way youâre going, that wonât take long. Listen, I think thatâs the girls coming in now.â
âThe usherettes?â
âThatâs right. Renie MacLeish and Edna Angus are on this afternoon. Then Faith Pringleâs swopping with Edna this evening. Itâs a complicated timetable â comes of having to work such late nights. But we all get our time off â never worry about that!â
Jess replied that she wasnât just then worrying about time off â only seeing the customers.
âNever saw any at Dobsonâs, you know. Only their bills of sale and accounts.â
âHeavens, itâll noâ take you five minutes to get used to seeing the
