pays us a decent salary for performing, but covers all our travel expenses
and accommodation. Although that’s a factor in our decision to be here, he
always gets the crowds in. He’s also known in the clubs for his anti-drug
policy; basically, if anyone is caught carrying or doing drugs within the
club’s walls, you get banned from ever entering again, and thrown to the cops.
I may be a drunken ass half the time, but drugs are something I’ve never done.
No intention of doing either.
Slowly approaching the guys, Donovan having
lost Callie along the way, I get my first glimpse of Luke, who Callie is crazy
about, apparently. I give him a good once over and shrug. I have no idea why as
there’s nothing special about him.
“Reece. This is Luke – from Rebel
Walking.” Phoenix frowns as he meets my eyes before moving his eyes between the
two of us.
“Luke,” I mumble, wanting to be anywhere
but here right now, especially knowing that Callie likes this guy.
He grins and laughs before looking off to
his right. I follow his line of sight and see Thalia and Callie in deep
conversation with their heads together. No fucking way.
“You’ve spotted my fiancée,” Phoenix says
making it known one of the girls is with him.
“You’re not engaged to them both, though.
Which one’s yours?” Luke asks, rubbing his whisker covered jaw, and licking his
lips without removing his stare.
Phoenix glances at me as though he’s
waiting for me to say something before giving Luke his attention again.
“The dark haired one. Thalia. The other one
is her best friend, Callie…she has a thing for you.”
    Fuck
me. My eyes immediately meet Phoenix’s.
“I think I’ll go and say hi then.” Luke
glances between us before saying, “She has gorgeous legs and a tight ass.”
“You have no idea,” I mumble under my
breath, but he catches it anyway. His expression changes from lust to surprise.
Unable to stand still any longer, I turn my
back on them and walk onto the stage to start helping get the gear set up. If
I’m busy there’s less chance of me starting anything with Luke, but he better
keep his damn hands to himself, otherwise…
“What the fuck’s wrong with you? And don’t
say Callie. You made your choice about her, now you have to live with it.”
I stiffen at the voice, but continue to set
up the equipment. “Thanks for that – Mom,” I sarcastically tell Donovan
without looking up.
He laughs. “You do know Luke has a
reputation with the women?”
I drop a speaker on my foot. Motherfucker! Why did I decide to wear
sneakers instead of boots?
Looking at Donovan under my eyelids, I
watch him wipe his eyes, which are watering with his loud as fuck laughter.
“Sorry…” he sits down on top of another
speaker, chuckling and not sorry at all.
Taking a deep breath, he tries again.
“Sorry man. That must have hurt like a fucker.” He grins.
I frown at him. “Do you think we can get
through a night without you mentioning Callie and my past screw up?”
Donovan’s laughter fades and the smile slips
from his face. He leans forward with his hands resting on his knees. “That’s
the thing…it’s not in the past.”
“Like hell.” I heave the speaker into
position and start plugging the gear into the relevant slots. “It’s in the past
and that’s where it’s staying.”
I can feel his glare as he stands behind
me. “Fuck if it is. But I’ll tell you something, she’s a sexy, smart, young
woman. And if you don’t intend to go after her, groveling on your knees, then,
as far as I can see, she’s a free agent.”
I clench my fists wanting to plant them in
his face, but luckily for him, he walks away and I’m left there with a pile of
equipment to set up. “Suits me just fine,” I snarl and throw myself into the
job.
Lifting up the next speaker, I continue
slamming around, as I finish setting some of the gear up in silence. As I work,
my gaze finds the chick from before standing to one side
