asked on the ride to his
grandmother’s house.
    “I don’t
know. It depends on how our date goes.”
    “Just make
sure he uses a condom, okay?”
    She hoped her
son didn’t see her grin.
    “I will, and
I hope I can trust you to use the same good judgment when you have sex for the
first time.”
    “I definitely
will use protection. I don’t think I ever want kids.”
    “You mean I’m
never going to be a grandmother?”
    “You really
want to feel old?”
    She smiled
again. She’d always felt like a young mom because she’d given birth to him a
few months shy of her eighteenth birthday and assumed she’d be a young
grandmother too. She didn’t know why she felt that way. Nicky’s last comment
had made her realize her intuition might have been wrong.
    She pulled up
on the driveway of her mother’s house.
    “Give my love
to grandma, and don’t give her any trouble, okay?”
    He got out of
the car but leaned in on the open window.
    “Just
remember the condom,” he said before turning away.
    Now waiting
for Jake, she hoped he’d remembered to bring them because she hadn’t bought
any. She jumped when she heard the doorbell.
    This is it.
    Gen walked to
the door and took a deep breath before opening it. Jake stood on the doorstep
looking more handsome than he had the first time she’d set eyes upon him. He
wore black pants and a light blue shirt which had its top two buttons open. His
hair looked like it had been washed before he’d left his house, his face
recently shaved, and a whiff of cologne drifted her way. A
spicy, masculine scent that made her realize just how long she’d been without a
man. How much she really missed the opposite sex’s companionship.
    “Come in,”
she said, knowing she’d been staring too long.
    “This looks
like a nice neighborhood. I wasn’t aware there were so many homes on the east
side of town.”
    “It’s great,
nice and quiet, close to the parks. You want some wine or anything to drink?”
    “Wine sounds
great.”
    She led him
through to the kitchen were she poured them both a glass of wine before showing
him into the living room.
    “Wow, this is
some backyard,” he said, standing at the patio door.
    “It’s my own
design. Lots of upkeep, but it gives me plenty of practice for my customers.”
    “It’s
beautiful. I would imagine it’s wonderful sitting out
on the patio when the sun sets over the mountains.”
    “Nothing
quite like it.”
Even better if you’re watching it with someone beside
you.
    He turned to
look at the wall divider and walked over to look at the photos.
    “Is this your
son?” he asked pointing to a photo of Nicky that had been taken a few years
ago.
    “Yep, that’s
him.”
    “He’s very
handsome. I’m guessing you’re very proud of him.”
    “I am, most
of the time.”
    There was an
uncomfortable silence again.
    “Oh, here’s
to success with your job interview on Monday,” said Gen, lifting her glass.
    Jake lifted
his before taking a sip.
    Silence
again. They both drank some more, glancing at one another over the rim of their
glasses.
    “This seems
awkward, doesn’t it?” Jake finally said.
    “Glad you
think so too.”
    “So how
should we do this? I guess I’m a bit too shy for us to just start peeling off
one another’s clothes.”
    “Me
too. How about I go into my bedroom, undress, and put my bath robe on? You head to
the bathroom, undress, and use one of the towels and then come into my bedroom
when you’re ready.”
    “You sure you
haven’t done this before?”
    Gen held up
her hand. “Once we get into the bedroom you’ll see the answer is definitely
no.”
    He took hold
of her hand, which was shaking.
    “Let’s take
it slow and enjoy it with no pressure from either of us.”
    “Sounds
good to me. Oh and my bedroom’s down the hall, first door on the left.
The bathroom is second door on the right.”

    Jake walked
into the bathroom and closed the door. He took a towel down from the rack on
