with Mitch. You were about to go skiing with them, and you know it would be rude to blow them off for a guy. But then again, you havenât seen Mitch in monthsâand you would love to catch up and hang out with himâ¦.
You decide to snowboard with Mitch.
You tell Mitch youâll see him later, and ski with the girls.
Chapter 17
You go down the hall to search for Mrs. Bulow, and on your way, you run into DanâHeatherâs crush.
âHey,â he says. âHowâs your room?â âItâs good, but weâve got this problem. Iâm looking for Mrs. Bulow; have you seen her?â
âNo,â he says, leaning against the wall, âbut Iâm glad I ran into you.â He grins.
âWhy?â you ask him, confused. âIs there something you needed?â
âSort of,â he says, and pushes his blond hair back from his face. âI just wanted to say that I still think youâre really beautiful, and I still like you. I canât help it.â
Youâre shocked. âI thought you had a crush on Heather,â you say to him.
âNot really, I mean, honestly, I just started hanging out with her to get closer to you, and then she sort of started liking me, soâ¦â He looks up at you. âLook, I feel like youâve never really given me a chance. I know we had that one dateââ
âI wouldnât call that a date!â you laugh, remembering the day you went to a movie with him.
âYeah, that movie
was
really terrible,â Dan laughs. âBut we still had fun, right?â
âI donât knowâ,â you start to say, but he cuts you off.
âIâm ready to give it another chanceââhe looks at youââto give
us
another chance. If you are.â
You remember, for a split second, how you used to feel about him, when you first met. What
did
go wrong between you two?
âLetâs go skiing together, right now, just us. Letâs hang out and see what happens,â Dan says.
âBut I think Heather might really like you,â you argue.
âWeâll deal with that later,â Dan says. âCome on, please? Just give me one chance, then Iâll leave you alone.â He leans in close to you and touches your hair gently. It does seem like heâs really into youâ could it be true that he was just using Heather to get close to you?
You look back over your shoulder to be sure that no one has seen you two together, then you decide:
You should say no to Dan.
You want to join Dan for skiing.
Chapter 18
You race back to your room, and throw on your ski clothes with a quick explanation to the girls. âMitch asked me to meet him for skiing, so Iâm going,â you say as you dash out the door.
âHave fun,â Sierra says in a sarcastic tone. You can tell that she doesnât like the ideaâmaybe he does have a girlfriend, but so what? Itâs not like itâs a date or anythingâ¦right?
By the time you get downstairs, rent some skis, and get out to the chairlift, it looks like Mitch and Travis have been waiting awhile.
âWhat took so long?â Mitch says.
You donât know what to say, so you just shake your head. âSorry.â
âThe line is a mile long now,â Mitch sighs. âLetâs just go to the T-bar,â he says, huffing over through the snow with his skis. But when you get to the T-bar, it looks scaryâyouâre supposed to balance your entire weight on this metal bar and sit just right so that it pulls you up the mountain.
âI donât know about this,â you have to say. âWhat happens if I fall off?â
âItâs not cool,â Mitch says seriously. âThey have to stop the whole thing until you can get on again. So donât fall off.â He looks up to the front of the line impatiently.
âThis line is long, too,â Travis points out. âI noticed,â Mitch
