could have known the dilemma that was waging a war in my mind. How could I leave my entire life behind; all of my friends and what little family I had l eft? What was there for me in that place ?
I guess that I was sad to a degree. I knew that I couldn’t stay. It was completely unreasonable.
“You ready?” she asked.
“Uh, yeah.”
We wheeled our big suitcases out of the room and down into the lobby. A limo was waiting for us as we left the building. I knew that Dom had sent is for us, for me. It made me even sadder. It was going to be hard to tell him no.
The airport wasn’t far from the hotel. During the entire ride I started to feel sick, like I was going to throw up. It wasn’t fair. Why couldn’t I have met him at home?
When we arrived at the airport, Dom was standing there , just waiting. Seeing him made me start to shake a little. I had to hide my hands so that nobody would notice.
He opened the door for us and waited as we stepped out.
“So you’re the man I’ve heard so little about,” Ari said to him.
He regarded her only briefly, “Yes, nice to meet you.”
“Same here.” She paused and cleared her throat, “I’ll, uh, wait for you at the gate, okay?”
“Yeah, okay.”
Ari scuttled off in a hurry, the wheels of her lu ggage clacking loudly on the grooves in the ancient pavement .
“Sophie,” he touched my face, “it doesn’t have to be this way.”
I was almost starting my get mad, “What do you expect me to do?! I have a life back home!”
My hands were shaking violently , enough to make me lose my grip on the handle of my suitcase. The whole thing clattered down onto the ground. Tears were starting to sting the corners of my eyes and I did my best to hold them back as I leaned down to pick the suitcase back up.
Before I could reach it, Dom grabbed my wrist and pulled me in close to him. I looked up and sa w the pain in his face that I was dreading.
“You can have a life with me. I will take care of you.”
“I have a job- ”
“You won’t need a job. You don’t need to do anything.” He leaned down close to my ear and whispered to me, “Please. Just give me a chance.”
My heart was racing. I couldn’t put together the words to express how torn I felt right then.
“ Please don’t walk away , ” he said.
His words resonated inside of me like a bullet. As a solitary tear ran down my cheek, I looked over my shoulder to the tall windows of the terminal. Ari was sitting there by herself, waiting and looking slightly concerned. When I turned back to Dom, his eyes pleaded with me. His very soul was begging for me to stay; to stay with him.
I bit my lip and closed my eyes, “Maybe it is time to stop running.”
He kissed me . My tears mashed up against hi s stubbly cheeks as he did. While I rested there in his arms, I felt a n overwhelming lightness . I was afraid that if he let me go I might float away into the ether just like the s hell of a life that I was leaving behind.
“Yes,” he said after pulling back but not letting go, “you’ll never have to run again. I promise.”
A ri got on the p lane by herself that day. I went back to the limo with Dom and we left everything else behind. And as we rolled slowly back toward the resort, I could only look out of the window at the shimmering coast and wonder where this new path was going to lead. As long as Dom was by my side, I knew that I was prepared to hang up those running shoes for good .
