our true power and strength even though it will come at the cost of taking human life, to clean to mess she created. Storm was nervous, he wanted to go on the attack but without his master to guide him he was useless as a leader. I lowered my head and slipped away from the gathering.
Almost out of breath from having raced to the mine, I shifted to a werewolf. I needed the extra strength for the daring rescue I was about to attempt. I entered the den where Aislen and her sisters rested, my scent was threatening and the healthy she wolves went on the attack; arching their backs, growling, snarling at me while I scooped Aislen’s frail almost withered frame into my hand. It was inevitable, any sudden movement and they would attack, I could not risk Aislen being hurt in the process. The light of the crystal beamed in their golden eyes as they sniffed the air around me. Their stomachs were huge and hung heavily below them. I tried to communicate with them, to reassure them that I was not a threat, but I was unrecognizable in this form. To them, I wanted to steal their sister and it seemed that they were willing to die if it came to it to protect her. I stumbled backwards on a stone that caught under my feet and the sudden move sent them into a frenzy. One by one they launched themselves on top of me, snapping at my neck, arms, back, thighs and hips. I felt the sting of their bites and it sparked a fury within me. I swung my hands around peeling them off me like leeches. Their heavy stomachs worked against them as they crashed into the walls and onto the ground. My strokes were so powerful that I could hear the sound of bones breaking as they smashed into the hard surface below them. Even though I had no choice but to defend myself, the sight of their mangled bodies quivering as they whimpered on the ground about me, made me sad. I did not want to hurt them, they were my kin, but it was my life or theirs. I had only minutes now to take Aislen as soon their fractures would heal and then they would attack again.
As they laid there I noticed that the light from the crystal was moving within them, speeding up the healing process and it hit me. I snatched the crystal, ripping out of the sink in the wall and held the shining beacon directly over Aislen so that she swallowed the light. As it moved throughout her, her arms began to fatten, her face filled up and her sagging skin recovered. She was whole again and as plump as her sisters. I was thrilled; I clutched the crystal as though it were my own heart. Aislen instinctively changed to her werewolf form and we ran out of the mine together, taking the crystal with us.

We successfully distanced ourselves from the pack and sought refuge at home in the town. It seemed like the rest of the pack were unable to find us in our human form. Despina still had not returned. With my mother’s help, Aislen gave birth to twins and I was a father to a healthy boy and girl. We called our son William and our daughter Katherine. They were beautiful creatures. William took after his mother with deep blue eyes that shimmered like the waves in the ocean as they reflected the light of the sun. Katherine looked like my grandmother when she was a babe, soft and fair with hazel eyes that complemented her dark brown curls. I knew that by now the other sisters would have given birth to their pups. We had no contact with them for months and the crusade against the scourge of the wolves persisted. The pack was held up in the mine by their master and I felt it was safer to be human. After we escaped from the mine, I had the crystal divided into five stones that were fastened to necklaces so that each of us had a piece of protection. Although we had not seen or heard from the pack or Despina for days, I was weary of her impending return. “Drastic measures need to be taken” the Mayor announced “we will drive those wretched beasts out into the open with fire” he bellowed. I was fearful that my brothers
