yellow chrysanthemums. Are you going to question everything I say or do?“
She considered that. „Yes, I think so. It’s safer that way.“
„If you were really safety conscious you wouldn’t be standing on that ladder. Did you have the wiring in
the place checked out? I’ll bet it’s a disaster. Get down and we’ll discuss the matter of where you want
these flowers.“ He started toward the kitchen without waiting for an invitation or directions.
Heather came slowly down off the ladder, dusting her hands on her jeans, and followed Flynn into the
kitchen. He was in the process of putting the bundle of chrysanthemums into the sink. When he started to
turn on the faucet Heather finally capitulated. „I’ve got some glass jars you can use as vases.“
He looked up, one eyebrow crooking wryly. „Your gracious acceptance of my humble offering over-
    whelms me.“
Heather set her teeth as she opened a cupboard and took down two empty mayonnaise jars. „What did
you expect, Flynn? That I’d throw myself at your feet the moment you reappeared on my doorstep?“
He grinned faintly and leaned casually against the counter while she arranged the flowers. „I’ll admit
that in a few of my wildest dreams I did run that scenario once or twice, but in my more rational moments I
tried to be realistic. I knew this wasn’t going to be easy. Have dinner with me tonight, Heather.“
She frowned intently as she worked with the flowers. „Sorry, I’ve got too much to do around here, and
besides, I don’t feel like going to the trouble of changing clothes.“
„We’ll go someplace where you won’t have to worry about your clothes. There’s a taco joint a few
blocks from here. You’re dressed perfectly for it. Afterward I’ll give you a hand putting in the rest of those
light bulbs. Please come with me, Heather. I just want to talk to you.“
Her hands stilled on the flowers as Heather frantically tried to decide what to do next. She’d never
heard Flynn Rammage ask for anything in such a humble tone before. She wasn’t sure she liked him in this
    role.
It would be much easier to keep him at a distance if he kept to his old, arrogant ways.
„Flynn, I think it would be a waste of everyone’s time, including your own.“
„I can guarantee it won’t be a waste of my time.“
Heather finished stuffing the last chrysanthemum stem into the jar and turned to face him. „I’m telling
you right now that I won’t climb back into bed with you,“ she said quietly.
He hesitated, his gaze serious. „All I’m asking for tonight is dinner and some of your time.“
„You want something more than that, Flynn. I’m not entirely without brains.“
„I want to talk to you. I’m not asking you to go to bed with me.“
She looked away, uneasy under that intent gaze. The mass of yellow flowers held her full attention.
Flynn had been right. She loved yellow chrysanthemums.
There were two ways of handling Flynn Rammage that were probably both guaranteed to fail. One was
to surrender without a fight, as she had the first time around. The second was to run from him as if he were
a demon hunter from Hades. The first method was obviously not a very intelligent approach. She’d already
proved that much. Instinct warned her that the second method was dangerous because Rammage would
react to the challenge with all-out pursuit. Heather had a horrible suspicion that in that race she was sure to
    lose.
The only other method she could think of at the moment was casual, disinterested civility. Besides, she
    was hungry.
She smiled coolly. „All right, Flynn, I’ll let you buy me dinner. I guess you owe me that much, don’t
    you?“
He didn’t return the smile. „I owe you a lot more than that. Going to collect?“
„Are you offering me a little revenge?“
He shrugged. „Why not? You deserve it.“
She shook her head ruefully. „Too late. If you’d come around with that offer six or seven months
