intervention,â I say, anxiously eyeing the busy office. The warning bell just rang, and students and teachers alike are buzzing around hurrying off to class.
âWe missed you at the party,â Nellie says, sounding disappointed. âWe dressed alike and everything. All eyes were on the two cute Black girls when there should have been three.â Oh, here we go again. This girl gets salty at the drop of a dime. But, I know itâs all in love.
âNellie, you know I wouldnât have missed the party if it was in my control. Also, I had enough of Misty and KJ during the week. I really didnât want to deal with their energy on the weekend too,â I say. I hope she understands my decision. âI would have been cool with you ditching me to get to know a guy who could be your soul mate.â Iâm still high off Jeremy from Saturday night. I can only imagine how our first kiss is going to feel.
âEnergy, soul mate? What the hell happened to you on Saturday, Jayd?â Mickey asks, mocking my vibe.
âSo you did get my messages,â I say, nudging her in the shoulder with my elbow. âWhy you didnât call me back? Iâm crushed.â
âOh, shut up, girl. You know you couldnât care less about me returning your call. We had to recuperate from Saturday night,â she says, returning my nudge.
âYeah, girl, it was heavy up in Byronâs house. Shrimp, caviar, chocolate soufflé, you name it. I had niggeritis all day Sunday.â Mickey is crazy.
âIâm quite sure thatâs politically incorrect,â Nellie says, looking offended.
âWhatever. You know Iâm right,â Mickey says, rolling her eyes at Nellie. âSo, Jayd, howâs the White boy?â
âHeâs real cool,â I say, ready to drop the details of our date. But the killjoy arrives right on cue. I bet she was listening to our entire conversation on the low.
âWhatâs up?â Misty says as she enters through the double doors connecting the main hall to the office. No this girl isnât talking to us after all the shit sheâs put us through in only the first week of school.
âDid you hear something?â Mickey says, looking around the office as if she doesnât know itâs Misty talking.
âNo, I didnât,â Nellie responds, playing along. âI thought I heard a rat, but it couldnât have been. The administration would send an exterminator immediately if there were any pest control problems on campus.â
âNot if the pestâs mother worked here,â Mickey says with a giggle. She and Nellie can be so rude sometimes. But, I do agree. The school would be better off without Misty around.
âAgain, I try to be friendly and this is how Iâm treated,â Misty says, feigning hurt. She could really care less if Mickey or Nellie speak to her; she just gets pleasure out of their reactions. âCat got your tongue, Jayd,â she says, noting my silence.
âI have nothing to say to you, Misty.â
She shoots me a look of pure hatred. I wish she would say something slick to me, âcause this morning Iâm not in the mood and I will snap back at her.
âIf Mrs. Cole asks, tell her I went to the ladiesâ room,â Misty says, walking back through the doors leading to the main hall.
âThat bitch has got some nerve, greeting us like weâre homies. Sheâs lucky we ainât in Compton right about now because Iâd whip her ass,â Mickey says.
Â
âGood morning, ladies,â Mrs. Cole says as she walks toward her desk from the principalâs office carrying two DVDs and a set of keys. âNellie and Mickey, youâll be in the small conference room adjacent to the principalâs office. Misty and Jayd will be in the large conference room, next to me.â How Misty and I got placed in the same room for in-house suspension is beyond me.
