do for you, you know I’m here for you any time you need me,” I tell him, still trying to reign in my temper. “I’ll do anything I can for you and you know that, but I can’t give him the same, not anymore. I’m sorry if you don’t understand that…”
“Nah,” he says, his eyes focused on the salt shaker in front of him. “I get it, Tommy. I can’t do it, but I totally get it.”
“Thanks,” I tell him as he looks up from the shaker and meets my eyes. “I mean it. You need me? You call me. I just… I can’t fuckin’ do it, Richie.”
    “Okay,” he nods.
I know I should say something else to him, but it’s taking all I’ve got to not storm out of this fuckin’ diner right now and go ballistic. I’ve been through a lot of shit and every single fucked up thing in my life can be tied to the man who raised me, the man who’s now telling my brother that he’s changed. Richie might fall for that shit, but I won’t. Not ever again.
We sit in silence for a few minutes, neither of us sure what to say next until the waitress comes back over.
    “You two need anything?”
“Yeah,” I tell her, clearing my throat and giving her my carryout order and facing him again.
We spend the next ten minutes catching up on random shit until the waitress brings my food over and I thank her as I hand her a twenty.
“I gotta get the fuck out of here,” I tell him in a low, gravelly voice as I move to stand. “Cal’s waiting on me and I got…”
When he sees me gesturing toward my head, he sees me slipping into a bad place and nods his understanding.
“Alright,” Richie says, tossing a five on the table and standing with me. Following me quietly, we make our way outside towards where my car is parked a few spots down from his. “I’ll give you a call sometime next week, see how you’re doing.”
“Okay bro,” I tell him, pulling him in for a hug before I get in the car and head back to the apartment.
My head’s still fucked by the time I make it up the stairs and push the front door open.
Callie’s still spread out over the couch exactly how I left her, topless and her short skirt pushed up her legs. One hand rests lazily over her stomach while the other is absentmindedly playing with the gold charms on the necklace I gave her this afternoon. As I push the door shut, she looks up from the chick flick she’s got playing low in front of her on our big screen and gives me a sultry smile.
    “Hey baby,” she says softly.
And just that quick, everything in my head begins to calm.
“Hey,” I respond low, taking her in as I set the bag holding our food down on the coffee table and hand her the half melted peanut butter milkshake she asked for.
“You didn’t get one?” she asks as she sits up on her elbow and sips from the straw, letting out a low, appreciative hum of pleasure.
“No,” I tell her, my eyes still dancing over her as I sit on the end of the couch by her feet.
“Thanks for getting me dinner, baby,” she says, pushing herself up the rest of the way and leaning over to give me a kiss.
The salty sweet of the milkshake is on my lips when she pulls away. As I slip my tongue out to taste, her eyes dart to my mouth and I hear her breathing falter slightly.
“You okay?” she asks quietly, causing me to nod slightly.
“Yeah,” I husk against her lips, shaking the last of the shit from my head. “My head’s just…”
“Tommy,” she whispers, her eyes full of understanding as she runs the pad of her thumb over my lower lip. “Don’t think about that shit, baby.”
Gripping my neck, she gently pulls me down lower to meet her mouth, kissing me gently again. As her eyes hold mine, she moves her leg to straddle me and in just seconds, she’s perched on top of me. My hands instinctively rest on her thighs, pushing under her already raised skirt to find her hips and gripping her possessively.
“I’m trying,” I admit as I peer down into the grey eyes that both know and own
