open trunk door to sit next to Kade. Rain hammered the roof of the Jeep.
“So what brought you to the Red?” he asked.
You. “I always heard the climbing was good.”
He nodded. “You’re from Boston?”
No. Some genius at the FS decided to make the missing persons report out of Boston. “I worked there for a while. I’m from Cincinnati originally.”
She looked away. She didn’t like lying. The temperature was dropping and not just because of the rain. When he looked at her that way, she wanted to confess the truth to him. Kade went to the end of the Jeep and pulled the trunk door shut. Wynn slipped off her wet shoes.
“Might as well get comfortable. We have a long night ahead of us,” he said.
The rain wasn’t letting up anytime soon. It’d be half the night before the water lowered. “So...how long have you been a ranger?”
“Almost five years.”
“Have you run into trouble up here?”
“Just drunk hikers.”
“I’ve heard rumors about drugs being planted in the hills.”
His gaze narrowed for a moment as though he were considering something. “There are. It’s a game of how quick can we find them and shut them down before they harvest.”
There was more. Wynn could see it but he was holding back.
“You deal with the weather better when you’re inside.”
“When I’m outside during a storm, I don’t do as well. It makes me feel vulnerable.”
Wynn pulled her hair out of her ponytail and ran her fingers through the tangled, wet mass. Kade reached out and brushed her hair off her cheek. The heat of his fingers caressed her cool skin. His finger smoothed around her chin. She closed her eyes. She knew where this was going, and there was nothing she could do to stop it. For tonight, she just wanted to forget that she was working undercover, and that she was there to investigate Kade’s integrity.
He lifted her chin with his thumb. “I want to kiss you.”
“Do you now?”
“Yes.”
Her eyes fluttered as his lips pressed against hers in a sweet, romantic kiss. Wynn wrapped her hand around his wrist, letting her palm smooth up his arm. Kade’s hand ran around the back of her neck, taking the kiss deeper. Before she could stop him, he was pulling her across his lap. Wynn groaned when she felt the long, thick edge of his cock press against her thigh.
She was losing control of her body and the investigation. She stopped him with her hands on his chest. “Kade.”
“You have a really full lower lip. It’s so soft, so kissable.”
He nipped and loved her lips with his. She had to slow this down. They pressed their foreheads together. Both were breathing wrongly. Wynn closed her eyes, trying to get control of her body before she did something else she’d regret tonight.
“We shouldn’t,” he said.
She drew back, stunned and surprised. “No, we can’t. You’re right. We shouldn’t. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have kissed you.”
“Maybe I like kissing you, Wynn.”
That was the problem. She was enjoying his kisses way too much. Kade slid his hand up over her cheek in a sweet caress.
They started to kiss again. They took it faster and deeper than before. Wynn broke her mouth away as his hand found her breast, and his fingers pinched the hard curve of her nipple through her shirt. He leaned down and nipped her pebbled nipple and the cotton of her shirt into his mouth. She groaned, running her fingers through his hair as she pulled him closer. There was too much clothing in the way, too many obstacles for them to overcome to ever be together. All of it didn’t matter right now. All she wanted was a few stolen kisses that took her to the point of forgetting.
She shoved Kade away again. She couldn’t forget about the lies she was telling herself. “Kade, we shouldn’t.”
“What if I want to? What if we both want to?”
She knew if she kept going, she’d end up screwing him in the back of this Jeep. She wasn’t about to do that. She didn’t ride bareback, nor
