and Abbey begantalking, Sarah had whispered, âWe ought not to be eavesdropping.â
âI know, but weâre going to, arenât we?â Joshâs eyes sparkled, and he added, âI love to eavesdrop! Itâs always been a hobby of mine.â
âYouâre just awful, Josh Adams.â
âYes, I know, but youâre going to help me be awful, arenât you? Listenâtheyâre getting into another fight.â
The pair sat there listening as Abbey and Dave argued and then finally broke away from each other. When they had disappeared, Sarah said regretfully, âThatâs such a shame the way they fight all the time.â
âOh, I donât know. It gives them something to do. It keeps them from getting bored.â
âItâs not right, Josh, and you know it.â
Josh leaned back against the rail and stretched out his long legs. He was barefoot and wearing a pair of cutoffs, and the breeze felt good on his bare legs. âI guess youâre right,â he said. âI remember a few of the fights
weâve
had.â He grinned down at her. âThey werenât any fun. I was always glad when they were over.â
âSo was I.â Sarah smiled back. She was wearing shorts too and a green blouse made of some sort of soft material. âWeâve always been good friends, havenât we? Even back in Oldworld.â
âWell, I wasnât very nice to you back then,â Josh reflected. âI remember when I met you. I was real impressed, but I didnât want to show it.â
Sarah laughed suddenly, her laughter sounding light and tinkling on the air. âYou certainly didnât show it! You were a real snob, and I was so scared and alone.â
Josh reached over and took her hand. âIâm sorry about that. Iâve told you before, but Iâll tell you again.â
Sarah seemed pleased. She squeezed his hand. âOh, well, girls are just more romantic. Why, look at Dave and Abbeyâtheyâll probably fall in love.â
âThose two? They fight like cats and dogs.â
âThatâs the way it always is. Havenât you ever read any romances? The course of true love never runs smooth.â
âWell, theirs doesnât, thatâs for sure.â Josh was conscious of Sarahâs soft hand in his, and it embarrassed him. Suddenly he pulled his own back. âI donât know. It seems like thatâs not quite right.â
âAnd donât you remember how Captain Daybright and Dawn fought so much? You wouldâve thought they hated each other.â She nodded firmly. âI knew right away they were going to fall in love.â
âThen I guess you and I will never fall in love. We donât fight that much.â
This seemed to displease her. She got up and said, âGood night, Josh. You have no romance in your soul.â
Josh sat there dumbly, wondering what he had done. Finally he shook his head and said, âI guess Iâll never learn to understand women if I live to be a hundred years old!â

Jungle Trek
I guess weâre ready,â Josh announced. He glanced up at the ship, which had nudged into the sandy beach, and said wistfully, âWe may not see you again for a long time. Wish us luck.â
Captain Daybright and Dawn had helped unload their supplies and now stood looking at the Sleepers with affection. âWeâll wait here for you. I wish I were going along, but youâll be all right,â Daybright said. He went around shaking hands with each of them.
Dawn followed his example, giving each a hug. When she had embraced the last one, she stepped back and said, âItâs very dangerous in there. I wish you didnât have to go.â
âItâll be all right,â Dave said cheerfully. âWeâve got plenty of supplies and weapons, and Goél sent us, so how can we miss?â
âThatâs a good way to look at
