Road to Destiny (Scorpio Stinger MC Book 5)
miss a thing, do you? And you know I’d never intentionally keep anything from you.” I paused for a moment as I stared into her beautiful eyes. Trust was reflected back at me, and I had to swallow hard before I could continue. “But this . . . I can’t tell you. Cobra asked me not to talk about it, even with you.”
Her breath hitched, and a cloud passed over her eyes for an instant before she narrowed them at me. “Can’t tell me what?”
“Princess, all I can say is that we have to move into the compound as soon as possible.” I didn’t intend for my voice to sound harsh, but I wanted her to know that this wasn’t negotiable and that I didn’t want to argue about it.
Jade sucked in a breath. “Why would he ask something like that? Who is threatening the club . . .  or worse, one of you? You’ve got to tell me, Ryder, or else I’m going to be sick with worry. Cobra would never ask something like that if it wasn’t serious. I don’t understand that much about Scorpio Stingers, but I do know that the president wouldn’t call everyone in if it wasn’t life-threatening.”
Fuck. Jade was far too perceptive. It went against everything in my gut to have to keep the truth from her.
“It’s nothing serious.” I swallowed away the lie, hating the secret between us. “Cobra is just taking precautions, that’s all.” I laughed but it sounded fake, and I knew that Jade could see right through me. I shrugged nonchalantly, trying to convince her by sticking as close to the truth as possible without giving too much away. “It’s his job as president to keep everyone safe. And the best way to do that is to rally us all together. As a team we’re far stronger than each brother on his own. It’s always been like that.”
Jade stiffened. She wasn’t quite buying my story and I couldn’t blame her.
Fuck, I’m just trying to protect her. At least that’s what I told myself to soothe my conscience.
She’d feel obliged to warn Mia, and that would just snowball into a cluster-fuck of epic proportions. And if she believed my life was threatened—even if it wasn’t certain yet—the worry could be disastrous for our babies.
For the thousandth time that day I wished there was an easier solution, one that didn’t involve me insisting that Jade move into the compound with me, especially now, when everything was going so well.
“Is the club in lockdown?” She pushed me away and stood up from the bed, both her hands on her hips, her head tilted to one side.
“Yes, baby.” My gaze raked over her naked body, taking in her bump, her fuller tits and wider hips before it came to rest on her gorgeous face.
Her cheeks were flushed. “How long do we have to stay there?” A degree of panic had slipped into her voice and it cut me like a knife.
I rose from the bed, my cock soft as I stood in front of her. I reached for her but she took a step backwards.
Stormy eyes flashed at me. “Answer me, Ryder.”
“I can’t tell for certain. We have to stay as long as it takes.” At least that’s not a lie.
Jade’s palm rubbed big circles over her belly. “But I need to see the doctor and how am I going to organize the wedding if we have to stay at the compound indefinitely? We need to see people, choose what we want . . . that kind of thing.”
    The wedding? Fuck. Of course.
I swiped a hand over my stubble. This was a lot harder than what I’d imagined. I hated disappointing Jade but I didn’t really have any other options. “Babe, we may have to move the wedding date. I’m sorry, but I don’t have all the answers.” I could kick myself that I hadn’t thought of all of this earlier, but the wedding had faded to the back of my mind after what Cobra told me.
Jade bit into her lower lip. Her eyes were misty, and she blinked way too fast. I reached out and with my index finger, I loosened her lip and pressed my fingertips to her mouth. “Jade, baby, don’t get upset. It’s not good for you and the
