was gone. âOkay . . . guys? Guys?â He fought back the instant panic that crept into his heart. âHa, ha. Good one, guys. Very funny. Good, good. Very witty. Jewel? Where are you? Kids? Jewel?â
Suddenly, sharp talons burst out of the trees and grabbed him, carrying him off.
âAhhhh!â Blu cried.
But no one was there to hear him.
Chapter 6
âS quawk! Squawk!â The unmistakable sound of a rare blue Spixâs Macaw rang out through the jungle.
âItâs a macaw!â Tulio exclaimed. He and Linda took off after the sound. The bird kept squawking.
âBlu?â Linda shouted. She and Tulio pushed through thick jungle foliage and broke into a clearing. They were running so fast they almost didnât see the sheer cliff drop in front of them.
âI swear that sounded like Blu,â she said, gasping for breath. She looked around but there were no macaws in sight. The trail had gone cold.
âThatâs impossible, Linda,â Tulio panted. âHeâs back home in Rio, safe and sound.â
Â
Blu continued to be dragged through the canopy of trees.
âIâm an American citizen, you savage!â he yelled, his feathers electrified with anger. âI demand to see my ambassador! I know my rights! I know my rights!â
Suddenly his captor dropped him, and Blu landed on top of a tree. He was surrounded by an intimidating pack of birds covered in camouflage.
Fumbling in his fanny pack, Blu whipped out his Adventure Knife and pushed a button. A spork popped out. Blu waved it wildly in front of him. âBack, you barbarian!â
The bird hesitated, staring at the spork with confusion.
âYeah, thatâs right! Itâs a spoon and a fork!â Blu yelled. The bird flew away. âBe afraid!â Blu shouted. âBe very afraid!â
Someone tapped Blu on the shoulder and he whirled around, spork at the ready. âWhoa, whoa, whoa! Whoa, buddy. Put the spork down,â a voice said.
To Bluâs shock and relief, it was Rafael, and with him were Jewel and the kids.
âLet me go!â Nicoâs voice came from the sky. âPut me down! Hey, careful, thatâs my guitar talon.â Whish! Nico and Pedro were dropped next to the others.
To everyoneâs surprise, one of the birds flew through a waterfall, revealing a bright blue feather. A little blue head popped out from behind some leaves. One by one, more blue heads started to peek out from branches, nests, and tree holes.
âI canât believe we found them!â Jewel said, awestruck.
âWell, technically, they found us,â Bia said as more macaws popped out. The macaws were very curious about the newcomers. âOkay, weâre going to need some name tags,â Blu said. A few of them circled Blu, touching his feathers and making him feel uncomfortable. One bird grabbed his mints from the fanny pack. âWhoa. Ah, hello. Okay, no . . . those are Tic Tacs. Not that you need one. But theyâre good. You eat them.â
To his horror, the macaw threw the entire package of mints into its mouth and swallowed it whole.
âOh, whoa, no, no, no, no, no!â Blu cried. âNot the whole box! Get that out of your mouth!â He grabbed the macaw and performed the Heimlich on him until he coughed the box up, right into the outstretched talons of Eduardo, the chief of the tribe.
âWhat is this doing here?â Eduardo bellowed, looking at the Tic Tacs and at Blu. âWhat is going on?â
The crowd quieted down. A macaw spoke up. âWe found them flying too close to humans.â
âHumans?â Eduardo yelled. âAnd who are you?â
âUh . . .â Desperate to say the right thing, Blu backed up, searching for the words. Instead, he fell on his butt.
ââUhâ is not an appropriate answer.â Eduardo got in Bluâs face. âI asked you a question. Where did you come
