you a bit of time to, yâknow â¦â
âHow much time did you think I needed?â
âI â¦â
âJimmy, Iâm not sixteen any more, yâknow? Going out with the lead singer in the band was all well and good when he was just on the posters on your bedroom wall and it wasnât real. But this is different. Even when I was in Dublin, the way people kept coming up to you in the street, I felt like I was getting in the way. Like I was taking up time you should have been spending with them. Iâd just kind of stand to one side and try not to look too much like some groupie youâd just picked up.â
âAh Jesus, Susan, itâs not like that. And itâs all new to me too, believe me. I still get surprised when it happens and then I donât know what to say to them. I mean, this is Dublin, right? Half the time they just come up and go, âhey you, singer bloke, you think youâre fuckinâ great, donât ye?â and then walk off.â
She laughed. It was the sweetest sound heâd heard in weeks.
âSusan â¦â
âJimmy listen to me. I told you before that not a lot of people can do what you can do. You have so much talent, God. I donât want to be the one who stops you showing it off. You deserve everything you have now. You should enjoy it.â
âBut Iâm not. Itâs not like it was meant to be. Thereâs something ⦠fucked up about it all. Somethingâs missing or something.â
âWhat could be missing?â
âI ⦠Iâm not sure.â
Donât fucking say it, Jimmy. Itâs not fair. Donât mess with her head like that. Youâre either in or youâre fucking out. Whereâs your balls? There was another pause. Then â¦
âI saw the âStrutâ video yesterday.â
âOh, did you? So, what did you think?â
âItâs so weird to see you on the TV like that! You wouldnât believe it. But, no, itâs really great! Itâs a good change after âCaillteâ. Shows that youâre versatile. Aesop smiles a lot when heâs playing the drums, doesnât he?â
âDepends on the song. You should have seen the head on him this morning when we played my latest masterpiece in the studio.â
âYou both looked great. Very sexy. I didnât see the Japanese guy you were talking about though. Is he not coming back to play with you?â
âProbably not. Maybe. He doesnât know yet. Itâd be great though, heâs a great bloke.â
âWho were the girls?â
âWho?â
âThe girls in the video.â
âOh, just some dancers. We hired them for the shoot. Probably another reason Aesop was smiling like that.â
âAnd you?â
âNah. Not my scene.â
âJimmy?â
âYeah?â
âItâs ⦠I guess itâs kind of hard to sit all the way over here and wonder. I mean, I know what Aesopâs like. Amanda sent him a few emails, but I donât think he replied. I can only imagine what you guys are getting up to, the things that are happening around you now.â
âSusan, itâs not like that. I swear to God.â
âIsnât it?â
âNo! Well, maybe a little bit. I mean itâs there all right. Aesop is certainly enjoying himself. But Iâve known him since school and, believe me, heâs been living this life since he was about thirteen. The only difference is that he doesnât have to borrow money off me all the time now. Heâs the rockstar. Iâm just a musician, same as I always was. And I donât get caught up in all that shite. Itâs a bit distracting to be honest. Iâm too busy. And anyway itâs embarrassing.â
âJimmy, be a rockstar.â
âWhat?â
âGo and be a rockstar. Please. Itâd make me happy to know that everything youâve worked for all these
