sold-out shows, but one-on-one, he can be kind of shy. So, honestly, it wouldnât surprise me at all if he had a secret crush on me.â
Rachel turned away. She had heard enough. But then she heard something that made her pause.
âI just donât think that line about âmaking musicâ is the clue, though,â said Gabriella Bruno. âItâs gotta be that part at the endâwhen Brody stops singing and talks instead.â
âI couldnât understand him,â Marisol replied. âWhat did he say?â
âThatâs why itâs the clue!â Gabriella said excitedly. âItâs not supposed to be easy to figure out.â
âWasnât it, like, L-O-L?â asked Clarissa. âYou have to turn it up at the end to really hear it, but he says something about L-O-L.â
âI think the line is, âI will always something-something L-O-L something-something you,â Gabriella said. âI listened to it over and over this morning.â
âL-O-L? Laughing out loud is not that romantic,â Becca said, a skeptical look on her face.
âNo way. My big sister only goes out with guys who are funny,â Amber disagreed. âShe says that a sense of humor is just as important as being cute. Besides, Brody and I were laughing together a ton at the seventh-grade picnic.â
âSo you think the song is about you ?â Tammy asked, acting surprised. She didnât say it in a mean way, exactly, but it was enough to make Amber look at the ground in embarrassment.
âDoes L-O-L mean anything to you?â Marisol asked Tammy. âDid you and Brody laugh together a lot at glee club?â
Tammy smiled again. âAbsolutely. We goofed around all the time. I listened to that line a couple times too. I think he says, âIâll always share L-O-L times with you.â Itâs just Brodyâs way of saying that heâll always make time to laugh with meâno matter how famous or busy he gets.â
As the other girls started to talk all at once, Rachel finally walked away. She approached her locker on autopilot, hardly aware of all the commotion in the hall around her.
âRach! Rach! Wait up!â Taylor called behind her. âWhatâs wrong? You just disappeared.â
Rachel focused very hard on dialing her combination. âSorry, T,â she said quietly. âI didnât mean to ditch you. I just . . . I couldnât listen to that anymore.â
âWhat do you mean?â Taylor asked. Then her eyes grew wide. âOh, seriously? You think Brody likes Tammy ?â
Rachel just shrugged.
âOh, whatever ,â Taylor said. âCome on, Rach. Donât get sucked into that. Tammy didnât say one single thing that convinced me.â
âYouâre just trying to make me feel better,â said Rachel.
âNo, Iâm just telling you the truth,â Taylor replied firmly.
âBut what about glee club? Thatâs probably what the âmaking musicâ line is about,â Rachel said glumly.
âIt could just as easily be about church choir,â countered Taylor.
âWell, what about the L-O-L thing?â Rachel said.
âDid you and Brody joke around at choir?â asked Taylor.
âNo way. Goofing around is definitely not allowed. Besides, we practice in a church. Itâs not really the best place for cracking jokes,â Rachel said miserably. âI have to go back and listen to that line with the volume up, but I think theyâre right that he says something about L-O-L. And if thatâs the case, he definitely wasnât talking about me.â
For a moment Taylor looked stumped. Then sheshook her head. âIâm still not convinced that Tammyâs right. I mean, âIâll always share L-O-L times with you?â Who talks like that? That doesnât even make any sense!â
A faint smile flickered across Rachelâs
