didnât hear a word I said. They were too busy pouring hot tea on each other and screaming their heads off.
Chapter 14
LOSER INVENTIONS
Motor scooters whizzed past us as Alli led the way to Pigge House, our dorm. Kids flew kites. Kids sun-bathed on blankets on the lawn. A group of serious-looking dudes crept by silently, holding binoculars up to their eyes.
âAre they spies ?â Feenman asked Alli.
She laughed. âNo. Theyâre bird-watchers. Thereâs a rumor that a blue-bottomed, fat-breasted wren is on campus.â
She smiled at Feenman. âAre you into birds?â
Feenman thought about it. âWellâ¦I eat friedchicken,â he said. âDoes that count?â
We stopped in front of a bunch of kids who were working hard, building something very tall. It looked kinda like a house .
âWhatâs up with that?â I asked a tall, skinny guy, who was working hard in a T-shirt and shorts. âYou building a new dorm?â
He stopped hammering. âYo.
Weâre the contest winners fromBaked Potato Chips Middle School. This is our project for the Make-a-Great-Invention Contest,â he said. He mopped his forehead with one hand.
âWhat is it?â I asked.
âItâs pretty simple,â he said. âInside is a new kind of elevator. This is a small one, but one day we hope skyscrapers will have them. Itâs powered by human breath.â
âWow!â
âAmazing!â
âUnbelievable!â
My three buddies went nuts.
âYeah, I thought of doing that,â I said. âBut itâs a little too simple for us. We need more of a challenge.â
We walked on. Crench hurried to catch up to me. âBig B, weâre in major trouble,â he said. âTheyâre building an awesome elevator. And we donât have one idea.â
âDonât worry about it,â I said. âWeâll think of something.â
I could picture that five-thousand-dollar prize. And my buddies and me hanging out at MTV-6.
We had to think of something fabulous!
At the edge of the lawn, we came to another group of hardworking kids. They were working on acontraption with a big metal loop at the top. Three guys were making a fan for it. Other kids worked on an electronic control.
An awesome-looking girl smiled at me. She had dark eyes and long, dark hair and was wearing tennis shorts and a white polo shirt.
âThatâs my friend Nicki,â Alli said. âNicki Toros. She goes to Poly-Wannacracker Academy.â
âIâve heard of that school,â I said.
âCan you guess what our invention is?â Nicki asked.
âDoes it receive radio messages from Mars?â I asked.
âItâs the worldâs best bubble-blowing machine,â she said.
âAwesome!â Feenman said. âI blew bubbles for my social studies project.â
She stared at him. âYouâre joking, right? What grade did you get?â
âAn F,â Feenman said. âBut it was my best project all year.â
âHow does the bubble machine work?â Crench asked, scratching his hair.
âYou pour the liquid in here,â Nicki said. She pointed to a jar on the back. âThen the fan blows the bubbles into the air. Theyâre as big as beach balls. Theyâre made of plastic. They last for weeks .â
âNot bad,â I told her. âYouâll probably come in secondâafter us.â
Her dark eyes flashed. âWhy? Whatâs your project?â
I raised a finger to my lips. â Ssshhh! Lots of kids here would like to steal our idea. I wish I could give you a clue. But our project is too exciting to talk about. We donât even talk about it to each other !â
âWhat school do you go to?â she asked.
âRotten School,â I said.
âFigures,â she said.
