Outwardly, the first week of high school was great—my classes went well, I’d been asked to try out for the junior varsity baseball team, I had a new friend in Travis, and a hot girl wanted to hang out with me. I should’ve been happy, but at that moment all I felt was sadness and frustration.

I was sitting at my desk while Tweet lay across my bed, her feet propped up on the headboard, crossed at the ankles with closed eyes. When I swiveled my chair around to look at her I had to smile. She was tapping her toes to the beat of the music while she played air guitar.
God, I loved watching her listen to music.
She had caught me a couple of times staring, but I don’t think she felt it had reached creep level yet. I wanted to go ahead and ask her about Brittani now before Mom came to get me for my dentist appointment. I needed her to be okay with it even though it wasn’t a date and Tweet wasn’t my girlfriend.
I rolled my chair over to turn the music down and then closer to the bed. Clearing my throat I said, “Tweet?”
    “Yep.”
“You know that girl who sat at lunch with us today, Brittani Monroe?”
“Yep.” Her answers were quick and clipped. She had no interest in discussing Brittani.
“What do you think about her?” I asked, bracing myself for her answer.
    “She’s a slut with a stripper name.”
I couldn’t help my chuckle. “Tell me how you really feel. Don’t hold back.”
She lowered her legs and swung them over the side of the bed. Leaning back on her arms, she propped herself up, causing her chest to stick out. Tweet’s boobs were awesome. They didn’t have to be pushed up and half naked to get noticed. They were just as hot in a T-shirt as they were in a bathing suit.
I was so caught up in my thoughts of Tweet’s chest that I almost missed hearing her when she asked, “Why are you asking me about her?” She tried to sound casual, disinterested, but I could tell she was curious. It must have been the writer in her. She was always looking for more behind the story.
“She asked me out,” I said, leaving out the part about other people being there.
“On a date?!” She shot straight up in shock. I loved her reaction.
    “Yeah, I guess.”
“That’s crazy talk!” Her nose crinkled as her eyebrows knitted together in disbelief.
She was actually jealous and so damn adorable. Adrenaline pumped through me causing my heart to slam against my chest. If Tweet was jealous that meant her feelings matched mine. Maybe “us”being more wasn’t that weird. Glancing up she caught me smiling at her.
“What’s so crazy about it?” I asked.
“Um… well, number one, we’re only fourteen and not allowed to date until we’re sixteen. Number two…”
“I can date now,” I said, locking eyes with her. Technically it wasn’t a date. It was hanging out with a group of kids from school. She didn’t need to know that, at least not yet.
Folding her arms across her perfect chest, she narrowed her eyes at me and said, “You’re kidding?”
“My parents said it was okay.”
“How are you going to get to the date? You don’t even have your driver’s permit yet. I’m pretty sure your handlebars aren’t wide enough for her to sit on. I mean, have you seen the ass on that girl?”
“I’ve noticed her ass.” I gave her a big smirk. By the look on her face I could tell she did not like my answer, but that was okay. Tweet was jealous and that made me happy. “She asked if I wanted to go bowling. Her dad’s going to drop us off.”
“So you’re going to go through with this?”
“I guess. Why not? She seems nice enough and she’s kind of pretty.”
Looking down, she picked at her jeans, and huffed, “Well, do what you want. It’s your life to ruin.”
“It’s just bowling, Tweet,” I told her, trying not to let her see how much I was enjoying her being pissed off.
Her head tilted back and toward one shoulder as her eyes focused on the ceiling. “Yeah.
