it took its toll on me, trying to juggle high school and football, hell sometimes I would work all night to get a job done and still go to school in the morning. Luckily, my father put my education before the work I had at the boatyard, but he did not think much of my love for football, nor did he understand my desire to go to law school. Tony startled me out of my trance by calling my name.
“Chris we are coming up on Sand Key, tell me when you want me to drop anchor.”
“Tony, drop the anchor on the south side of the island.”
Tony and I were on the rocky side of Sand Key fishing for hours when I got a bite that just about pulled me overboard. I must have fought that fish for more than twenty minutes before I managed to pull it into the boat. Well it was dark that night, almost pitch black and you couldn’t even see your hand if you held it in front of your face. As I pulled my fish out of the water and threw it onto the deck of our boat, it started wrapping itself up my fishing line, it scared the hell out of both us. And before I could say a word to Tony, he grabbed my shotgun and shot a big hole in side of our boat, completely missing that snake like intruder squirming all over the floorboards. I never realized how big of a hole a twelve-gauge shotgun could make in a plywood hull until that moment. As it turned out my big catch of the day was a large angry moray ell and he used the large gaping hole in the side of our boat to make his getaway. Tony grabbed a flashlight and pointed it at the water gushing in through the large hole in the side of the boat.
“Chris what are we going to do now.” He asked me excitedly.
“Well Tony, considering that we don’t have a radio to call the Coast Guard I suggest that you grab a bucket and start baling the damn water, before we sink.” He looked at me dumbfounded as if he did not understand the dilemma that we had gotten ourselves into. After all, we were on a boat with water gushing in so fast that if we didn’t do something quick we would be swimming real soon and I had no intentions of spending the night on Sand Key.
“Tony if we don’t get the water out of the boat before it floods the engine room; we will not be able to start the engine. Unless you have a better idea please get off your ass and start baling water w hile I try to patch the hole.” As Tony handled the water situation, I gathered some deck boards and made a patch to fix the hole. Well it took some hard work and after a couple of hours of working in the water, we managed to fix the hole in the side of the boat.
“Good job Tony I knew if we worked together that we would be ok.” His face showing a sign of relief.
“Thanks Chris, does that mean you are not angry with me anymore.” Tony says shyly.
“Tony, I was never angry with you, I was just afraid that if we didn’t hurry up and fix that hole that we would sink out here.” I said as calmly as I could muster.
“Are you going to tell mom and dad?” He said with concern written all over his face.
“No Tony, there is not any point in upsetting mom with the details of our little mishap with the shotgun.”
“Boy, that sure is a relief Chris, I thought you were going to tell dad what happened. If he knew about the shotgun, he would never let me go fishing with you again.” I could see that he was concerned about our parents finding out about the tragic events of our fishing trip.
“If mom or dad ask you why we got home so late, just tell them that the fuel line was clogged and the engine wouldn’t start so we had to clean out everything and that took a couple of hours.” I knew that if we told our parents that there was something mechanically wrong with the boat, they would drop the issue of us getting home late. Tony’s expression changed and he took on a completely new demeanor once he realized that I had every intention of covering up this whole ordeal. The ride back to Key West took longer than
