announced. “Let’s freshen up then go and get our freak on!”
         Alexis followed
everyone inside and was getting ready to close the door when she heard someone
call out to her. Turning around, Alexis frowned when she recognized the guy
she'd seen right before the elevator doors closed. “Wait, weren’t you just
downstairs a second ago? How did you get up here so fast?”
       Amir confidently walked towards her
smiling. “I took the stairs.”
“You…took the stairs? Ten flights?” Alexis looked at him
doubtfully. “You’re not even breathing hard.”
“I play football at Morehouse.” Usually
when he mentioned those two facts together, women tripped over themselves to
speed things up to the next level – but apparently, this one was different.
“Oh…okay. Well, can I help you?” she asked
hesitantly after he just continued to stand there.
Amir was a little put off, but quickly got
himself together. He stepped closer and leaned against the wall, smiling again.
“To be honest, I wanted to meet you.”
“You ran up ten flights of stairs to meet
me?” Alexis waited for the punch line. The women outnumbered the men here five
to one. As good looking as this guy was, she doubted very seriously if he would
go to all that trouble just to say hello.
       “My name is Amir.”
Suddenly turning shy, she glanced down.
“Umm…my name is Alexis.”
“Pleased to meet you Alexis.” Amir looked down at her
suitcase. “So you ladies are just getting here?”
Before she could answer, Mia screamed
from inside the room. “Lexie, what are you doing? Are you coming in are do you
plan on…” Mia's sentence trailed off when she saw Amir leaning against the
wall. “Oh. Uhhh...”
Amir looked at Mia. “Hello,” he said as
she continued to stare. This was the reaction he was used to getting - which
made Alexis even more intriguing to him. “Hey, I don’t wanna hold you up, but I
was wondering if we could meet up later on this evening.”
Speechless, Alexis stared at him then
turned pleading eyes towards Mia. For some reason, he made her nervous. There
was no way she could spend time with him later. “Oh, I’m sorry, uh, we were all
planning on going out…”
“She’d love to meet you later,” Mia broke
in.
       “Mia!”
“What? Girl, more than likely, we’re all
going to end up doing our own thing anyway.”
           Alexis huffed in silence as
Miagave Amir her cell phone number. When she found out
Amir and his friends were planning on attending the step show later that
evening, Mia told Amir they could meet up there.
Amir looked at Alexis and hesitated. “Is
that okay with you?”
Alexis' stomach did somersaults as she
stared into his eyes. He was so large and muscular. It wasn’t hard to believe
he played football.
       “I…I guess so.”
He blinded them with another one of those
smiles. “Good. Well...I guess I’ll be talking to you later. Thanks Mia.”
He left them standing there staring after
him. Before he rounded the corner, he turned completely around and watched
Alexis as he walked backwards. He gave her one last grin then was gone.
The moment he was out of her sight,
Alexis felt as if she had been released from a spell. She whipped around to
confront Mia. “Why did you do that?!”
“Lex, please. That man is fine! It’s time
for you to have a little fun. Come on…its spring break!”

        Hours later as
Alexis and her friends were leaving the step show, her phone rang. She had been
on pins and needles all evening waiting on Amir to call, and when her phone
still hadn’t rung by eight o’clock that night, she didn’t know who she was more
upset at: him for not calling or herself for being  disappointed when
