ticket, I saw an opportunity to confront him. A man that gorgeous doesnât come around too often. Since Iâve been single for quite some time, I gave him my phone number. He said heâd call and I hope he does.â
That was not what Jaylin said. My insides were boiling because heâd lied. âI . . . I checked him out too, but I noticed a ring on his finger. That said he was taken, so I backed off.â
âHonestly, I didnât get a chance to look at his fingers. I was so wrapped up into his eyes. It was like . . . like I was in a trance or something. If heâs married, though, all I can say is, I hope not happily,â she laughed.
I swallowed. âIâm sorry, weâve been chatting and I didnât get your name. My name is Nokea.â
âMine is Mariah. Everyone calls me Mia for short.â
âMia, I work for a major marketing firm in Florida,â I lied. âWhat do you do?â
âIâm a school counselor. Iâm also a part-time waitress at a restaurant. With this economy, everyone needs two jobs in order to make ends meet.â
At that moment, I was speechless. Why did Jaylin lie to me? I thought. All he had to do was be honest. I guess that was asking for too much. I couldnât wait to get settled in at Patâs house so I could call him.
Â
Â
Pat was so happy to see me. She knew that I was coming, but had no idea that her mother and I had planned a surprise baby shower. I told her I was in town to visit my parents and thatâs all she knew. For hours, we sat around and talked about her marriage, her baby, and how much weâd missed each other. The time had flown by. Since I wasnât making my way to my parentsâ house until tomorrow, I told Pat I was going to take a shower and call it a night.
âAre you sure?â she said, waddling around the kitchen with her big belly.
âYes, Iâm tired. Last night, I didnât get much sleep and I hoped to rest on the plane. That didnât happen either so Iâm turning in early.â
Pat walked me to the guestroom and offered to bring me some extra pillows.
âNo, two is enough. I already know where your towels are and your relaxing Jacuzzi tub is calling me. Iâll see you in the morning, okay?â
Pat gave me a hug and left me in peace. I closed the door and looked at the phone on the nightstand. I hadnât called Jaylin, like I told him I would, so I sat on the bed and dialed out on the cordless phone. On the first ring, Nanny B answered.
âHello,â I said.
âHi, Nokea. Have you already made it to St. Louis?â
âYes and I had a smooth flight too. Is Jaylin around?â
âHeâs out back with the kids. Hold on, Iâll get him for you.â
âNanny B,â I said. âWould you do me a huge favor?â
âSure.â
âEarlier, Jaylin had on some dark gray pants. Most likely, theyâre hanging in his closet. At the airport, we met a travel agent and I wanted to call her about some rates for a future trip. Would you get the card out of his pocket for me?â
âNo problem,â Nanny B said. We talked about the kids, until she stated that she was in the closet and didnât see a card in Jaylinâs pockets.
âAre you looking into the pockets of his dark gray pants? I know he has several pair of gray pants. I think there is only one pair with cuffs at the bottom.â
âIâm still looking, but I donât see . . . wait a minute, here it is.â
âIs it the card?â
âYes, but the card is not from a travel agent. A counselorâs nameââ
âIs her name Mia . . . I mean, Mariah?â
âYes. Itâs Mariah Davis.â
âThank you, Nanny B. Thatâs the card Iâm looking for. Would you put it in my drawer for me and please ask Jaylin to come to the phone.â
âOkay, sweetie, hold on. Have a good time and Iâll
