Festival. For that matter, whereâs your father?â
âDunno, Aunty,â Frank replied. âLast we saw of him, he was pretty busy coping with what happened tonight.â
âWell, for mercy sakes, what did happen? I couldnât make head or tail out of the news broadcasts!â
The Hardy boys described the strange disappearance of Takashi Satoya, and their own subsequent adventures. The bathrobed spinster listened with keen interest.
âHmph, sounds to me as though Satoyaâs been snatched by business enemies!â she declared. âNot surprising either, when you stop to think how big a corporation heâs running. Thatâs probably why heâs been hiding from public view. He knew someone was out to get him.â
âIâll buy that about someone being out to get him,â Chet piped up. âIf you ask me, itâs probably a mysterious gang of Oriental killers!â
âSuch as?â Joe said.
âHow do I know? Maybe that creep you spotted who was all in black could be one of them!â
â If we spotted him,â Frank amended. âBut none of that explains how Satoya vanished.â
âThose flashes in the darkness could have blinded everyone for a second or two while you were stopped on the highway,â Aunt Gertrude pointed out. âPerhaps that was long enough for a kidnapper to drag him out of the car before you got going again.â
âWhat about his aide Ikeda, who was drugged?â
âPerhaps the kidnapper had a confederate who jabbed him with a hypodermic needle.â
âHm, itâs an interesting theory,â Frank said politely if a bit skeptically.
Just then a car was heard pulling into the driveway. Soon afterward Fenton Hardy strode into the house. He greeted everyone in his usual friendly fashion, but Frank and Joe could see that their father was both angry and deeply concerned over the nightâs events. However, his sonsâ report about the limousineâs secret compartment made him feel somewhat better.
âWhat was Mr. Satoya planning to do in this country, Dad?â Frank inquired.
âAmong other things, confer with officials of the Road King Motorcycle Company. Thereâs talk of a merger between Road King and Satoyaâs own motorcycle division.â
âYou see? What did I tell you!â Aunt Gertrude cut in triumphantly. âA move like that could easily have stirred up business enemies!â
âQuite true,â Mr. Hardy agreed. âWhat Iâd like to lay hands on fast is the enemy in Satoyaâs own corporation.â
âHow do you mean, Dad?â Joe queried.
The detective rose from his chair to pace the kitchen floor. âSomeone tipped off the press that Satoya was coming to this country. The tip came in the form of anonymous calls to the news services and networks, and naturally, since Satoyaâs such a mystery man, they were all eager to get a look at him. Yet Iâm absolutely sure there was no leak in my security setup!â
âThen where did the leak occur?â
âIt has to be in the Satoya Corporation,â Mr. Hardy replied. âAside from the jet plane crew and his chauffeur, the only other people who knew in advance about his visit were Kawanishi, Oyama and Ikedaâthough Iâll admit itâs hard to believe Ikeda would deliberately have landed himself in such an unpleasant predicament.â
âSo right off the bat,â Frank reflected grimly, âwe have at least three important suspects!â
Next day, the Hardy boys decided to check up on Axel Gorkyâs story. The best way to do this seemed to be to interview Warlord. The famous dancer and his troupe were to perform at the Bayport Summer Festival and were staying at Bayshore College, which was sponsoring their appearance.
The boys arrived on campus about 10:30 in the morning and were directed to the gymnasium, where the troupe was working out. As they
