Candice still acts as though she has power,” Marco whispered into my ear.
I studied the woman as she continually rubbed her palm against Lucca’s chest. “It looks to me like she does.”
Marco shook his head. “Lucca’s the brother with the tender heart. He feels sorry for her because she doesn’t have access to the same kind of money she had before. He pays for her apartment in exchange for sexual favors.”
In my eyes, that made Candice no better than a prostitute. Then again, I suppose I wasn’t any better. I wasn’t being paid for spending time with Marco, but our relationship didn’t start out in the traditional way either.
“Happy Birthday.” Marco released me long enough to hug his brother before hooking me around the waist once again. “You remember Ella?”
Lucca’s eyes seemed to light up when he smiled at me. “Of course.” He stepped forward, breaking Candice’s hold, and placed a soft kiss on both my cheeks before touching my lips with his. “You’re more beautiful than I remember. Welcome to my home.”
    “Lucca,” Marco growled.
Lucca’s black eyebrows rose. “So it’s like that?”
    “Yes,” Marco replied.
I wasn’t sure what Lucca was used to but it was obvious he was stunned by Marco’s answer. “I’ve never known to keep a woman all to yourself.” Lucca licked his lips. “But just from that taste alone, I can’t say that I blame you. Still, it is my birthday.”
“So good to see you again, darling,” Candice purred as she pushed passed Lucca to press herself against Marco.
Marco glowered down at Candice as he took a step back, breaking contact. “Candice. I’d like you to meet my girlfriend, Ella.”
“Girlfriend?” Candice looked me up and down before a laugh escaped her ruby-red lips. “You mean your escort for the evening.”
“Candice!” Lucca reprimanded in a harsh tone. “They’re living together, so show some respect or I’ll send you home.”
Candice rolled her eyes while I said nothing at her transparent bitterness. I’d been around women like Candice before, and I knew better than to show her that she’d upset me. Blood in the water, I reminded myself as I stared at the shark with fake tits.
Lucca returned his attention to me. Well, my chest, but he was a man. Enough said. When he licked his lips, I couldn’t stop my body’s reaction. “Marco’s told me how much he’s enjoyed your company,” Lucca began. His gaze shot to Marco. “We need to discuss my birthday present.”
Marco stiffened. He glanced around the crowd before subtly nodding his head and suddenly Vince was at his side. “Escort Ella to the bar for another drink while I have a word with my brother.”
“Yes, sir.” Vince stared down at me.
I swallowed under his scrutiny. The man was just so big. I held up my champagne glass that was still half-full. It had to be obvious to everyone around me that I didn’t need another drink, but it was equally obvious Marco wanted privacy to talk to Lucca. I hoped he would put a stop to Lucca’s leering.
Before I could pull away from Marco, he bent down and devoured my mouth in a heated kiss, prompting a rude comment from Candice. “Why don’t you just fuck right here in the middle of the room and get it over with?”
Marco broke the kiss and shot a glare at the snarky blonde before looking at Lucca. “Get her out of here. Now!”
Candice held her palms up. “No reason to get pissy, Marco. I’ll go find someone else who enjoys my company.”
Marco’s eyes narrowed as a muscle in his jaw began to twitch. “Your father still makes a good living in his retirement thanks to my generosity. If you’d like to see that continue, you will shut your fucking mouth and remove yourself from my sight.”
I was surprised by the vehemence in Marco’s tone. I hated the stupid bitch, too, but it was the second time that day I’d heard that tone—the first being when he’d been on the phone with Tony earlier. I still didn’t
