against a steep bank to the back. In front of it ran the stream, which didnât seem too deep but was really wide. Once inside Gavin told us that we needed to split up.
âOne unit to protect the base and another to attack the enemy.â
Emma and Lily both pulled faces.
âWere you in the
army,
Gavin?â asked Lily.
âEr . . . no,â he replied. âWhy?â
âOh, nothing,â said Lily with a yawn. âI just thought from the way you were talking that . . . oh, never mind.â
I gave Chris a nudge. âTheyâre messing him about,â I told him.
Chris nodded. âHeâs a fool!â he whispered back. âHe deserves it.â
Gavin told us to decide amongst ourselves who was going to join which unit.
âI think it should be me, Chris, Jason an Emma!â shouted Lily. On the attack!â
â
Lily!
Stop being so demanding,â ordered Lilyâs mum.
âBut I was only sayingââ began Lily.
âI know, darling, but let someone else speak for a change,â said Lilyâs mum.
âOh, Mum!â replied Lily, looking sheepish.
Gavin grinned. âYouâve got five minutes to sort yourselves out,â he told us. âAnd then Iâll radio my colleague and weâll start . . .â
In the end Lily got her way about the attack unit. Joining the people sheâd asked for were Wendy and Dalâs dad. Everyone else stayed at base. Before we left, Gavin gave us a map of the course and some red stickers.
âStick them to trees along the way so that you donât go in circles,â he told us.
âOK,â I nodded, taking them from him. âBut how are we going to know what youâre doing?â
âEasy,â he said, grinning again.
He pulled the backpack he was wearing from his shoulders and produced two walkie-talkies. He handed one to Dalâs dad and the other to Chris.
âThe frequency is set to channel two,â he said. âDonât change it.â
Chris nodded. âNo way, José,â he promised. âWhat channel is the Blue team on?â
âFour,â replied Gavin. âRight â get going and remember the plan. You take their baseand then come back for us. If you need help, radio in and weâll send some. And work together, team!â
Once we were on the ground, I asked Dalâs dad what we should do because heâd been paintballing before.
âI donât know, Jason,â he admitted. âEvery time Iâve ever been we just shoot at anyone. Thereâs never been any of this war games stuff.â
âOh,â I said, feeling a bit disappointed.
âFirstly,â said Wendy, âwe need to check out the map and work out the direction of their base. Then we move towards it . . .â
âGood idea, miss!â said Emma, getting excited.
âWendy!â
replied Miss Rice. âFor Peteâs sake . . .â
âWhoâs Pete?â asked a confused-looking Chris.
âItâs just an expression,â Wendy told him.
Chris grinned. âCan we shoot Gavin?â he asked.
âI was going to ask that!â said Emma. âCan we,
please????
â
Wendy smiled and looked at Dalâs dad.
âWhaddya think, Mr Singh?â
âI think itâs a great idea,â he said. âBut after we get back . . .â
âYES!!!!!!!!â said Chris and Lily together.
âHeâs
soooo
annoying,â added Emma.
âOK, Red Unit â move out!â shouted Wendy. âLetâs go kick some butt!â
According to Mr Singh, the Blue team base was to the north-west of our position, with the stream ahead of us. So we decided to head west, following the stream until we reached a bridge. Very quickly we found ourselves obstructed by huge trees. Wendy motioned for us to follow her into a thicket, which was dark and dense.
âBe
