faces were the size
of that yucky round meal I ate every morning for cereal because we couldn’t
afford anything else. And the stadium looked like a bowl on the ground. Clouds
blurred the ground and I let my gaze wrench away.
    “My
concubine,” Getterus breathed into my hair. “My mate and I are well pleased
with you. Even now, I believe you carry the child all three of us will love.”
    “I can
practically taste it on her,” Nerrita mumbled.
    Even as
the Earth slipped away beneath my feet, I didn’t find it difficult to leave the
view and take in the beauty of my mistress. Her long lashes lay against her
purple cheek—the passion of her black blush had faded. She had a slight,
satisfied smile as she nuzzled her nose against Getterus’s nipple. Her tongue
languidly licked a stroke over that black nub. Getterus shivered and pulled us
tighter to him.
    “You must
know, that for us, you complete us. We’ve waited for you and you are perfect.
There will be no one else for us.” Getterus rumbled in a low, urgent way that
kept me from sinking into lethargy. I ran a hand over his chest and reveled in
the silky smooth skin that covered a cut, muscular chest that radiated power.
In such a short time, I’d become comfortable enough with them to touch. I’d
never been so free with anyone before.
    Nerrita
laid a hand over mine and squeezed. Getterus reached further around her and
placed his over ours. “We have a complex social system. I will try to help you
understand the most important elements of our lives before you meet the others.
We are of the nobility and therefore have the first right to claim a new
concubine. But once a concubine enters our society and provides the first
offspring, she may choose to move on to another couple, if she is wooed and the
couple has proven able to provide.”
    My heart
gave a lurch and I couldn’t contain the gasp. “I already know I’d never leave
you.”
    “That is
our wish.” Nerrita’s dark eyes captured mine and I couldn’t look away. It was
if she’d owned my soul at that very moment.
    “It is,”
Getterus agreed. “As a concubine, you have no duty to remain a caregiver of
your offspring, but we are traditional and have looked for you. We knew as soon
as we saw you, read your file, that family was important to you.”
    “It is.”
    “There is
an assembly aboard our station, waiting for you.”  He patted our combined
hands. The hand holding me had started to stroke in soothing paths along my
spine. “Our males are only fertile after consuming the enzyme in your milk.
Many will ask for a taste. Any concubine attending an assembly is expected to provide
that taste.”
    The leisurely
stroking halted and the alarm slamming through me broke through my contentment.
Getterus frowned at me and then nodded. “It is fine, little one. You have every
right to decline attending the assembly.”
    “We will
take you home first.” Nerrita stroked her hand over me. “Many concubines do
attend assembly to find new couples. Many find it a source of pride to have
provided offspring to several families. They always attend assembly and
share—Getterus and I have partaken of them. It pleased all of us, to revel in a
concubine’s milk. If you ever decide to do so, it is a favor to those who do
not have concubines. It keeps our morale higher. Since we came from Mars…”
    “Mars?” I interrupted.
I didn’t really attend enough school to say I knew everything, but I knew that
planet hadn’t been their home.
    “I don’t
suppose this is spoken of on Earth, but since you are now here, there is no
reason for you to stay uneducated on our history.” Nerrita smiled at me with
something like affection shining in her eyes. I’d never seen that look directed
at me before, but I recognized it. “Our kind came from far away, some years ago,
when our numbers and fertility had fallen to species-extinction levels. The
original Neliousians found humans but knew there was no way to procreate.
