âYou have the wrong number.â
Quietly she depressed a button and ended the call. Then she took a deep breath to steady herself. She hated the adrenaline and anxiety that flooded her whenever she heard Tonyâs voice. Seeing him was even worse. He was a mistake that simply wouldnât go away.
Heâll get tired of chasing me, she told herself grimly. Weâre not talking the love match of the century. He had a woman on the side while we were engaged. My fault, of course. I wasnât hot enough in bed.
The phone rang again. Faith jumped as though she had been pinched.
Walker reached past her and took the phone. Summer didnât even stir against his chest. She was used to sleeping in someoneâs arms.
âYeah?â Walker said curtly. He didnât like the pallor of Faithâs face.
âItâs Mitchell,â Archerâs assistant said. âThis Walker?â
âAs ever was,â he drawled. âYou working late again?â
âJust waiting for the wife to pick me up. Weâre going to the theater. The experimental one, where theyâre still learning the English language and expect the audience to fill in the blanks.â
âHer turn to choose, huh?â Walker said, smiling. Mitchell and his wife traded off picking entertainment.
âWhat was your first clue?â the assistant retorted.
âYou need Archer?â
âActually, I was looking for you. Remember that contact in Myanmar? The one you said might have a lead on some good ruby rough?â
âI remember.â
âThereâs a package from him.â
âIs it ticking?â Walker asked dryly.
âSo far so good.â
âIâll come by and pick it up. Ten minutes.â
He disconnected and looked at Faith. She met his eyes with a stubborn kind of defiance. âWas that Tony?â Walker asked bluntly.
âIt was a wrong number.â
Walker grunted, not believing a word of it. âTake your niece. Iâve got to run across to headquarters and get a package.â
Archer came into the living room just as Summer was handed off. He looked from Walker to Faith. âTrouble?â
âNo,â she said coolly. âSummerâs wet. Iâm going to change her.â
Walker didnât believe that, either, but he didnât say anything.
Archer waited until Faith was out of sight and said softly, âWho called?â
âMitchell was the second call. Iâm going to pick up a package of ruby rough from a new contact in Burma. Iâm betting the first call was her ever-lovinâ ex.â
âSon of a bitch .â
âOn his best days, maybe,â Walker said. âOtherwise Tony is pure chicken shit.â
Archer raked long fingers through his short hair.
âSheâs handling it,â Walker said.
âIâd rather do it for her.â
So would Walker, but as he wasnât even related, it wasnât something he was going to say aloud. His attraction to Faith was at best unfortunate. At worst it could be a disaster.
With a final curse, Archer put Tony out of his mind. âGo to Faithâs shop, check out those Montegeau rubies, and get back to me.â
Walkerâs eyebrows lifted, but all he said was, âWhen?â
âYesterday. Tomorrow at the latest.â
âWhat about that batch of ruby rough youâre expecting from Africa? Still want me to appraise it for you?â
âDamn.â Archer raked his hand through his hair again. âDo it first thing tomorrow morning. Then get over to Faithâs shop. I want you to stay close to the shop until I arrange for a full-time guard for her.â Frowning, he mentally juggled various Donovan projects and their particular needs. Lately it seemed as though he spent most of his time hiring guards, and he still didnât have enough people he trusted. Not with his sister. He wouldnât say the world was going to hell in a
