from the boot to just under the knee. âLost lots of blood. Them flying docs came and got me. They saved me life.â The stool creaked as she leaned forward. âIâd be delighted to help âem any way I can.â
Delighted? Josh smiled. The word didnât seem right coming from Ratchet.
âYou think thatâs funny?â Ratchet looked like she was about to pounce on Josh.
Joshâs smile evaporated as he quickly shook his head.
âNow,â continued Ratchet. âAny idea what youse want to show?â
Josh shrugged.
âWhat about The Flying Doctors ?â suggested Pete.
Everyone turned to look at him.
âItâs a TV show from the 80s,â he continued. âI havenât seen the series, but my mum is always going on about it. She reckons it was great because it was set in the outback. Showed things how they really were.â No one said anything, so Pete blundered on. âAnyway, itâs about the RFDS. And I know itâs TV not film. But maybe we could show the first episode, since it was movie-length.â
âDonât be daft!â roared Ratchet, getting to her feet and towering over the kids. She put her hands on her hips. Pete tried to disappear into the couch cushions. âYa canât just show ep one. That programstarted off as a mini-series. Three movie-length eps. All telling the entire story. You show one ââ she pointed an enormous finger at Pete ââ you show all three.â She crossed her arms over her chest, tools jangling in the belt. âAnd donât think I donât know who you are.â She glared at Pete and he shrunk even further down into the couch. âYou come here every Friday with your brother in that rundown Holden pickup.â
Pete breathed a sigh of relief and nodded.
Ratchetâs gaze narrowed. âAnd every Saturday night you sneak in here and sit behind the third tree on the right, from the back fence.â She paused.
Peteâs face went white.
âWithout paying!â
Pete tensed, looking as if he was about to run.
âBut youâre not in a car. So you donât get no sound. I figure since youâre that desperate for the silver screen, it couldnât hurt to leave you be.â
The tension drained from Peteâs body.
Ratchet stabbed an enormous finger in Peteâs direction. âBut donât think I donât know!â
Pete nodded hurriedly.
âUm.â Sally raised her hand as if she were in class. âWonât all three episodes be too long?â
âWork with me on this,â said Ratchet. âWeâll do the screenings over three consecutive nights. We can advertise to the tourists. Make sure to let everyoneknow how itâs raising money for the RFDS.â Ratchetâs eyes were glowing now. âItâs gonna take a bit of work to set up. Need to contact Crawfordâs and get permission.â
âWhatâs Crawfordâs?â asked Sally.
âHoley moley, people!â roared Ratchet. âDonât youse kids know anything? Crawford Productions is the company that made The Flying Doctors .â
âI knew that,â Pete piped up.
âYeah, well, I know someone who works there,â said Ratchet, voice dropping a little. âI can get him to speed things along and get us permission real quick. The fact we ainât making money for ourselves makes it easier.â The corners of Ratchetâs mouth twinged again. âYou just leave it to me.â Then her mouth hardened again. âBut youkids need to do everything else. You need to make posters. You need to advertise. And you need to get food to sell on the screening nights. Iâm providing the venue but I ainât providing the snacks. You have to do that. Got it?â
Josh, Pete and Sally nodded.
âSheâs real tired,â said Dad as he handed the phone to Josh. âSo make it quick.â
Josh grasped
