faded jeans, sporty pullover knit shirt and the sun-bronzed feet thrust into thongs. Kent
returned the look with interest It was obvious to Reyna that neither man was impressed by the other.
“Oh, definitely we,“ she murmured with a smiling glance at Jim. “I work here, so I have an interest in
the economic mainstay of the islands. I’m well aware of the crucial importance of tourism!“
That brought the amber eyes back to her in a split second. “You work here?“
“I have the day shift behind the desk – right, Jim?“
“One of the best people we’ve got behind the front desk,“ Jim agreed cheerfully.
“Incredible,“ Trev growled. When Jim and Kent both stared at him uncomprehendingly, he added
smoothly, “There was a time not too long ago when she could have been buying or selling this place. She
wouldn’t even have known your names. You would have just been part of the transaction.“ He leaned
against the counter on one elbow with a deceptive casualness and shook his head with a kind of astounded
amusement “A desk clerk , Reyna?“
“How the mighty are fallen, hmmm?“ She refused to let his mockery touch her. “I’m sorry to disappoint
you, Trev, but I happen to like my new work. Now, if you’ll excuse us?“
Kent needed no further prodding. He took her arm once again with a possessiveness that was new and
started toward the front entrance. All the way out to the parking lot Reyna thought she could feel that
flaming amber gaze on her.
“Who the hell is that?“ Kent grumbled as they slipped into his small open jeep.
“That,“ she murmured, “was Wellington.“
“Huh?“
“Did you spend your total high school career surfing? Didn’t you ever hear of the battle of Waterloo?“
He glanced at her, forehead creasing in a small frown as he started the jeep. “I’m not sure I caught the
class, but I did see the film. Who played Napoleon?“ he added perceptively.
“I did,“ she said simply.
“An old flame.“ Kent nodded as he started the little jeep down the narrow two-lane road that led into
Lahaina.
“Whoever said constant exposure to the sun addles the brains of a beachboy?“ Reyna grinned. “You’re
quite right. It was short and bittersweet, as the saying goes, and it was also all over six months ago.“
“So what’s he doing here?“
“Beats me,“ she admitted thoughtfully. “Let’s talk about something else, okay?“
He hesitated and then shrugged lightly. Kent was an accommodating soul. “Okay. How’s the plan for
the shop going?“
Reyna’s gray-green eyes lit up enthusiastically. “Beautifully! I meant to tell you first thing, in fact I’ve
discovered the perfect location in that small complex of shops and restaurants on the water by the new
hotel. Now I’ll have to start negotiations with the bank and with the owner.“
“You think there’s really a market for a gourmet shop here?“
“Definitely. Kent, most of the people who come to stay in these condominiums are accustomed to
entertaining and eating well. I know there’s going to be a strong market for clever and interesting picnic
lunches as well as specialties that they can buy and take back to their condos. I’ll make it easy and
carefree for them to entertain. They won’t have to lift a finger during their vacations, yet they’ll have all the
gourmet conveniences of home.“
Kent put up a hand to teasingly halt the flow of excited plans. “I’m a believer! You don’t have to
convince me, just the bank!“
“I’ll start working on that little project this week,“ Reyna vowed.
There was a long pause from Kent’s side of the jeep and then he asked interestedly, “Reyna? Could you
really have bought and sold the condo-hotel you’re working in now?“
She sent him a wry glance. “I worked for a large conglomerate that could have,“ she corrected calmly.
“I was in charge of… acquiring various enterprises for them at one time. That’s all.“
“Did
