Josh.â
âOh, honey, it was in so many ways.â Mom G. stared into space for a heartbeat then turned to Rachel. âDo you have someone in your life?â
She blinked. âUhâ¦you mean a man?â
âAre you involved in a relationship?â
âNo.â
âI didnât think so. Good.â Mom G. seemed to relax.
Rachel narrowed her eyes. âWhat do you mean âgoodâ?â
Mom G. gripped Rachelâs hand tight. âIs your hope still in Jesus?â
Rachel gently patted the frail hand encased within her own. âYes, my hopeâs in Jesus. Heâs my strength. You showed me thatâyou and Josh.â
Mom G. nodded. âGod loves you.â
âI know. Heâs blessed me greatly. He brought me to you. Without Him and you in my life Iâdâ¦be lost. Iâm doing what He wants with my life.â
Mom G.âs brows drew together. âBut He wants so much more for you.â
More? Sheâd tried to have more once and sheâd ended up with nothing but pain. Loving was a risk she was no longer willing to take. She shook her head. âI have everything I need. There couldnât possibly be more.â
âWhat about love? Arenât you lonely?â
Mom G.âs words struck a cord within Rachel. She tugged at her bottom lip, loath to admit that there had been times over the years sheâd watched couples, families, and felt an ache she couldnât explain. Was it loneliness?
Maybe.
But loneliness was a small price to pay to fulfill Godâs plan and to protect her heart.
âMy lifeâs very full. I might not have as many friends as I couldâ¦â Rachel frowned at the direction of her thoughts. Friends couldnât help in her quest to change emergency room procedures. âI just donât have time for relationships.â
âDonât grow old alone. Believe me, itâs not fun.â
Guilt reached up and slapped Rachel. âIâm sorry I havenât been here for you.â
Mom G. touched Rachelâs cheek. âNo, honey, you had to do what you needed to do. I regret that I never remarried after Frank died. I donât want you to make the same mistake.â
Rachel nuzzled into the touch. She hadnât known Mr. Green. Heâd been gone long before sheâd cometo live with Mom G. His picture graced the nightstand in Mom G.âs bedroom. âIâll be fine, I promise,â Rachel assured her.
âDonât you think youâd be better with Josh in your life?â
Rachel schooled her features. She didnât want Mom G. to know how upsetting she found the subject of Josh. She didnât want her to know she still hurt deep inside her heart, in a far corner she pretended didnât exist.
âDonât avoid this Rachel.â
Rachel met Mom G.âs gaze straight on. âThereâs nothing to avoid. Josh isnât a part of my life and heâs not going to be.â
Tears gathered at the corners of Mom G.âs eyes. âHe needs you.â
Mom G.âs sadness tore at Rachel. She wouldnât be able to make Mom G. happy. Not if her happiness involved Josh. âThis is upsetting you.â
âHe needs you,â Mom G. insisted.
Slowly Rachel shook her head. âHeâs never needed me. â
âBut he does. Rachel, heâs always loved you and you still love him.â
A double-edged sword of hurt and anger sliced through her. Her heart raced and her blood pounded in her ears. Josh didnât love her. She doubted he ever had.
As for her loving him⦠She closed her eyes briefly and hardened her heart. Been there, done that. Not doing it again. Emotions would not control her actions. Her goal in life was to make sure her mother hadnât died in vain, not to resurrect her relationship with Josh.
She opened her eyes and took a calming breath, regaining her composure. âItâs not a matter of love. Josh had
