their stomachs.
âOuch, Lulu!â Mia said.
âOof!â Maddie said.
Lulu rounded on them with fingers in the air. âOur great-great-great . . . well, whatever . . . old guy in our family invented the police. That means we should be excellent at solving crime. Like the mystery of who stole my suitcase, for instance.â
âNo one stole your suitcase, Lulu,â Mia said. âIt was just lost along the way.â
âYou donât know that,â Lulu said. âAnything could have happened to it.â
âIâll bet theyâve delivered it to our hotel room already,â Mia said.
âBut what if they havenât? What if someone took it andââ
âAnd what? Theyâre playing with your toys? Do you really think that would happen?â Mia asked.
Lulu started to sing a few notes that sounded like the beginning of a theme song. âThe Glimmer girls are on the case!â
Maddie couldnât help laughing. At least Lulu wasnât crying over the suitcase anymore.
âIt would be fun to be detectives, wouldnât it?â Maddie asked Mia.
âBut what would we investigate?â Mia asked. âWho would the suspects be?â
âWe can look for clues!â Lulu shouted, continuing on with her theme song.
Another bobby clopped past on his horse, and Lulu shouted after him, âWeâre related to Sir Robert Peel!â
âIs that right?â The bobby circled back and dismounted.
âActually, it is,â Mom said. âI was just telling the girls about their great-great-great grandfather, and about why London police are called bobbies.â
âFascinating,â he said.
âSo, weâre going to investigate our first crime,â Lulu said.
âReally, and what is that?â the bobby asked.
âSomeone stole my suitcase,â Lulu said.
âActually, it got lost on our flight,â Mia said.
Maddie looked from Mia to Lulu, praying her sisters wouldnât get in a fight right now, not in front of a police officer.
Instead of looking annoyed, though, the bobby nodded and pursed his lips. Then, after consideration, he said, âI suppose the suitcase could have been stolen. Or it could have been lost. When something goes wrong, the first thing a bobby must do is to think through all of the possibilities. We must never rule out any scenarios until weâre sure theyâre impossible.â
âWhatâs the second thing a bobby does?â Lulu asked.
âWell, usually weâd look for obvious clues. Then, if it appears the situation truly is a crime, weâd call for backup. Thatâs because three minds are always better than one.â
âSo we should look for clues!â Lulu bounced up and down on her toes. âAbout my suitcase!â
âYou can certainly keep your eyes open,â the bobby said. âAre the airline officials looking for your suitcase?â
âYes,â Mia said.
âWell, then, if it were me, first Iâd see what they discover. If they canât find your suitcase in a reasonable amount of time, maybe itâs time to dig a little deeper. In any case, itâs good to have such clever minds on the case. Particularly minds that descended from Sir Robert Peel.â
âWhat does descended mean?â Lulu asked.
âThat means heâs your relative from a long time ago,â Mom said. âAnd now, Glimmer girls, I think itâs time for us to say good-bye to our new friend.â
âTrue. I should head out on my patrol,â the bobby said, remounting his horse.
âGood-bye!â they all called and waved.
Mid-wave, Lulu let out a huge yawn. Maddie found herself yawning too.
âWeâre all tired,â Mom said. âBut every girl deserves to see the lights of London. Letâs ride around a little and then we can go back to the hotel and get a great nightâs sleep.â
