smile. Nicole mentally readjusted her anti-lover-boy suit of armor.
âIâd be happy to spend more time with Ms. Benoit,â he said.
âWhat?â Nicole blinked in confusion. She stared at her father.
âI said you two will need to work hand in hand over the next few months.â Stanton looked at her hard. âYou okay?â
âFine.â Nicole recovered and smiled. âI intend to have weekly meetings with the management staff and bimonthly company meetings with all employees.â
âI think Mr. Summers means you and I meeting alone.â Marcus assumed a casual pose as he took a sip from his glass.
Nicole thought heâd put emphasis on the word âalone,â yet when she looked at him he seemed all business. âYes, well, of course.â
âWith your guidance, Iâm sure Summers Security can at least hold ground. Iâm sure Nicole will follow your lead,â Stanton said.
âOnly sensible approach she can take, considering,â Uncle Lionel put in.
âI donât know about providing security services. At least I didnât until two weeks ago,â Nicole admitted.
âIâm sure youâll be up to speed soon enough.â Marcus nodded at her.
âI intend to be up to speed by the end of the week,â Nicole said with a cool smile.
âThatâs Summers blood talking. Meet the challenge.â Uncle Lionel winked at her.
Nicole saw Marcus stiffen. âYouâll notice my uncle has his feet firmly planted in the nineteenth century,â she joked to avoid another tense moment.
âHuh?â Uncle Lionelâs thick brows pulled together to give his broad face a confused expression.
âEat, Lionel,â Stanton said with a sigh.
âExcellent food. Hmmm.â Uncle Lionel promptly forgot the subject. He savored another mouthful of cheesecake.
Once they finished eating, Uncle Lionel paid the bill, andthey went back to the office. Cat waved a thick wad of messages when they entered the foyer outside Nicoleâs office.
âMost important ones are on the top,â Cat said.
âWonderful.â Nicole took them from her.
âWelcome to the world of being in charge,â Uncle Lionel said.
âMarcus, pleasure getting to know you better.â Stanton shook hands with him.
âSame here,â Uncle Lionel rumbled. He glanced at the large round digital clock on the wall above Catâs desk. âWe better shake a leg, Stan.â
âRight. We have a meeting in Lafayette this evening.â Stanton turned to Nicole. âBye, baby. Marcus.â
âGoodbye, sir.â Marcus nodded to both men.
Nicole felt like a small child being left by her father on the first day of school. âDaddy, wait.â
âCall me anytime. Though Iâm sure with Marcus by your side you wonât need me as much.â
âI intend to be right here for her, sir.â Marcus smiled at her father.
âStan, we really have to leave. Weâre cutting it close as it is.â Uncle Lionel waved goodbye and headed for the door.
Stanton kissed Nicole on her cheek. âOne benefit is I get to kiss the boss and she canât fire me,â he teased.
âThat is a nice perk.â Marcus glanced at Nicole. His smile widened when she blushed.
âWhy do I feel like Iâve just been patted on the head like a puppy?â Nicole wisecracked.
âMarcus, for you.â Cat held out the receiver of her phone.
When he walked away, Stanton pulled Nicole aside. âHeâs your best ally. Russell is sure to be a bit of a problem.â
âA bit of a problem? Thatâs a bit of an understatement,â she retorted.
âEven more reason to build a solid relationship with Marcus. Heâs not only good at what he does, but he seems genuinely loyal to the company.â
âYes, Daddy. I hear you loud and clear.â Nicole pushed down her natural inclination to rebel.
