sweeping away. She followed the path of his arm to his chest and frowned. He’d gotten more muscular and that hadn’t happened in just a few months. Keeping her head down and away from him had meant she’d missed quite a bit, some of it rather delicious.
His t-shirt stretched across his thick chest, and a part of her wished for just a few moments of uninhibited time with those muscles.
Claire shook herself mentally. It had been some time since she’d seen any action, but this was crazy. She was half tempted to toss him to the floor when all he’d done was compliment her.
Her eyes shot back up to his smug face. It was clear he knew the effect he was having on her and that was reason enough to get herself under control
She crossed her arms and glared at him.
“I want my gun back,” she said and held out her hand.
Conor snorted. “So you can shoot me?”
“No.” She shrugged. “Well, not yet anyway.”
She jumped when a loud burst of laughter came from him. “Fuck that!” He kept laughing. “You’re totally going to shoot my ass.”
Claire frowned. Her black hair slipped down the side of her face. “I’m not going to shoot you,” she said. “Seriously.”
    Conor raised a brow.
    “Well, not much,” she muttered.
Conor stretched his arms over his head. The shirt rose, exposing a sliver of skin just above his jeans. Claire licked her lips at the hard lines. When his hands came down, she looked up to his smiling face and frowned.
“You didn’t come here to chit-chat I hope,” she said, moving behind her desk. “And I hope you know, that’s not my only gun.” She frowned. “You mentioned something about a job?”
Conor walked across the room to the chair near her and sat. She noticed the position was in clear sight of the door and the window, as if he expected trouble.
“I’d be disappointed if it was.” He grinned, but the smile quickly fell. “Ennis sent me.”
Her head snapped over to him. This was such a bad idea.
“He’d like you to work with us,” he said softly.
    Claire snorted. “Not likely.”
“Is this where you take me out?” she asked slowly. There was another gun in the closet, but she doubted she’d be able to reach it in time. She could always make a run for it if it came down to it. Then again, she'd had her gun out before, and he still tackled her with ease.
She froze when he turned to look at her, horror in his eyes. “No,” he said firmly. “I did not come to take you out.”
He turned back to the window, and she watched his jaw twitch in anger. Maybe she hadn’t thought this out well. It wasn’t like she had tried to piss him off, but how was she supposed to know? He hadn’t really given any indication that she was safe. In fact, he kept watching out the window, which only made her suspect that she was about as far from safe as she could get.
“Ennis isn’t going to give up,” he said and looked over to her. She could see the dark circles under his eyes and wondered if he was getting any sleep. “He’ll keep after you until he either gets what he wants, or…”
“Or he has you take me out,” she finished. “So, it's just a matter of when, then?”
Conor stood and stared down at her with such severity she felt like a little child.
“I would never do that,” he said with force. He stuck out his hand. Her gun rested on his palm. “You need this. Just,” his hand gripped it a little tighter, “just don’t shoot me with it.”
She looked up to his eyes and was almost glad to see his happy-go-lucky nature back. She didn’t mind getting serious, but when it came to Conor, it always felt like so much more.
“No promises,” she said and tucked the gun into her desk.
When she looked back up, Conor was seated across from her and watching out the window again. She squinted into the darkness but saw nothing.
“So, here’s the plan,” Conor said, startling her from her thoughts.
    She frowned. “There’s a plan?”
    He chuckled.
