find you when it is done, my love,â Tellin says. He presses a kiss to her cheek.
When sheâs gone, Tellin swims over to the chair opposite mine.
âSheâs lovely,â I tell him. âShe seems very sweet.â
His smile is one of pure love and adoration. âShe is an angelfish.â
âIâm very happy for you.â And I am. Love is a gift. I know how it feels to love and be loved in return, and Iâm glad my friend can feel the same.
âThank you,â he replies. âAs I am happy for you.â
I give him a quick smile and then shift my focus to business. Now that weâre alone in the antechamber, it hits me hard that weâre about to host a council meeting. We need to talk through our plan so it goes as smoothly as possible.
âI think the meeting will be pretty straightforward,â I say. âIâll start by thanking them for coming, and then . . .â
I trail off as I realize Tellin is staring at me with a very confused expression on his face.
âWhat?â I ask. âDid you want to start the meeting?â
âNo, I . . .â He shakes his head and smiles. âYou do know that your hair is blue?â
I reach up and pull my hair to one side, trying to hide the blue section behind my hands. âYes, I know.â
He nods, and I can tell heâs trying to stifle a laugh.
âCan we focus on the important issue, please?â I say, tugging at my hair. I channel my embarrassment into professionalism, sitting up straighter in the chair and leveling a serious look at Tellin. âWeâre speaking at a council meeting in less than an hour, and Iâd like to feel prepared when we swim in there.â
âYes, of course,â Tellin says, his demeanor floating back to serious. âPlease continue.â
âAs I was saying . . .â I give him a stern scowl. âAfter the introduction, I will turn it over to you, and you can describe the situation in Acropora. Then I will make the official request for aid.â
âThat sounds like an ideal plan,â he says, his voice soft and sad. âI will have no trouble describing the challenges facing my kingdom.â
I sigh. âI know. But just think,â I say, trying to sound cheerful and optimistic, âin a short time weâre going to be well on our way to getting your people the help they need.â
He doesnât look quite as optimistic as I feel. âI hope youâre right,â he says. âI certainly hope youâre right.â
âI know I am,â I insist. âOur kin will rise to the occasion. Iâm sure of it.â
Â
âIs everyone here?â I ask, swimming back and forth in the hall outside the royal chamber.
Daddyâs secretary, Mangrove, checks his clipboard. âNearly all, Princess.â He runs his finger down the list. âI believe we are missing but one.â
âLet me guess.â I pause my pacing long enough to look at him. âQueen Dumontia?â
âYes, Princess.â
I exchange an unsurprised look with Tellin.
Dumontia is queen of Glacialis, a mer kingdom far to the north, in the arctic waters around Canada and Greenland. She is notoriously late, and not just because she has the farthest to travel. She enjoys making an entrance.
âBut the others are here?â I ask, my stomach starting to tighten. âAll the kings and queens?â
Mangrove nods. âIt is time.â
âOh, boy,â I mutter.
Tellin reaches out and takes my hand.
âAre you ready?â he asks.
A flutter of nerves upends my stomach, but only for a second. I remind myself why Iâm doing this and what I expect to happen. Everything will be fine.
âYes,â I say, squaring my shoulders. âLetâs do this.â
Together we turn to face the chamber door. A pair of palace guards nod and then pull open the doors as we
