going on?â Kyrian asked.
âSquireâs Council. There were a couple of deaths last night.â
âCouple?â
He nodded slowly.
Nick didnât like the sound of that any more than Kyrian did. âBy the look on your face, Iâm assuming they didnât choke on a bad plate of red beans and rice.â
âOf course not.â
Nick wrinkled his nose. âDo I want to know?â
âGiven your reaction the last time one was killed, probably not. But at least weâre not in my car now so I donât have to worry about you clawing up my upholstery again.â
âYouâre never going to let me live that down, are you?â
âYou all but stained my seat.â He passed a dry stare to Kyrian. âWonder if we neuter him if it would calm him down any?â
Kyrian laughed. âMight, however his mother would neuter us afterward. Donât know about you, but I would miss those body parts.â
âI could definitely live without them,â Ash mumbled in a barely audible tone. âUnfortunately, the beast I have to endure couldnât, and sheâd make me miserable.â He growled in the back of his throat. âAnyway, it was bad.â He spoke those last four words much louder and in staccato. âTheyâre thinking Daimons got to them.â
Nick went bug-eyed at the thought. âOkay ⦠I donât care for this thought of Daimons eating Squires.â Even if he was a Malachai. It just seemed like bad form.
âDonât worry. We wonât let them eat you. Alive anyway.â
Nick snorted at Kyrianâs dry tone. âThanks, boss,â he said sarcastically. âNow Iâm glad I didnât save you any of Rosaâs cookies. Youâre not worthy!â
Kyrian clapped him on the back. âThatâs okay. Youâll have earned them before the nightâs over.â
âHow you figure?â
âIt was payday today. Artemis dropped my money in the pool. You get to dive for it.â
Nick bristled indignantly. He hated that the ancient Greek goddess Artemis couldnât get with the times and pay her Dark-Hunters in cash or electronically. No, she still thought it was the Dark Ages, and once a month plopped a buttload of gold bars and gems on them. Saddest part was that, for a goddess renowned for her unerring archery skills, she had no aim. She always dumped it somewhere extremely inconvenientâthen again, she might be doing it on purpose. That made the most sense.
He glared at Kyrian. âAre youâ¦â He paused as he realized what that look on Kyrianâs face meant. âNo, not there again. Anywhere, but there.â
âOh yeah ⦠it landed at the bottom of my pool in the backyard. Have fun digging it all out. Make sure you donât miss any diamonds this time.â And with that Kyrian walked off with an evil laugh echoing behind him.
âI hate you!â Nick called after his departing back. âAnd I quit!â
âYou canât quit. I own your sorry ass, and your mom wonât let you quit until you pay off the hospital debt you owe me.â
Nick mocked his words while Acheron laughed at him. He grimaced at the ancient being. âDonât you need a cute, tacky-shirt-wearing, indentured servant?â
âLike a hole in my head.⦠No.â
âYou both suck.â
âYeah. Itâs what the fangs are for.â Acheron ran his tongue down one of them to emphasize his point.
Sighing irritably, Nick shook his head. âFine. Just donât let me get eaten like those other Squires. Remember, you canât kill me âtil Iâm twenty-four. Thatâs our bargain.â
Acheron shoved at him. âYouâre so weird.â
âAnd yet you like me. Whatâs that say about you?â
âThat I donât get out much.â
As Nick headed for the door, Ash stopped him. âYou want me to lend a hand with
