let the quiet engulf us as my mind spun with all the possible responses I could make, but I knew which choice I would be making. Iâd always known. It didnât matter how long he stayed away. It wouldnât matter if he left again â although that would break my heart â just like the last time. For me, nothing had changed. This time Iâd make sure he stayed.
I reached out and grabbed his hand. âCome inside and look around. We need to decide which one weâre going to live in.â
âYou know, we could build a new one just for us. With a rock garden.â
âA rock garden? I thought that was just a pile of rocks.â My heart began a steady thudding in my chest. Was Mike saying what I thought he was saying?
âThatâs all it would be without you.â
âThis isnât going to be easy, Mike. Thereâs a lot to forgive.â
âIt canât be more difficult than staying away for so long. I was a fool, Eli.â
âI know you were, and donât think I wonât remind you of that.â I smiled and waited for his response.
âGod you havenât changed at all. I can just imagine what youâll be like at eighty. You wonât let me get away with anything, will you?â
âYouâve got that right Mr soon-to-be-unemployed-CEO. I donât suppose youâve learned to cook at all because I work long hours and I love my job.â
âIâll take a class. Right after I buy this dinky little company I have my eye on.â
Eight years later
âWhen are you going to do something about that pile of rocks in the back yard, Eli? Itâs been there since you moved in.â Quinn peered out the kitchen window to the back garden.
âItâs not a pile of rocks. Those are the rocks for our rock garden.â A warm, sappy feeling bubbled inside me as I looked at the pile under the tree in the yard.
âBut you never build it.â
âThatâs not true,â said Mike as he came up behind me and wrapped his arms around me. âWeâve moved one rock every spring.â He pointed to the back corner of the yard where seven rocks sat, carefully positioned exactly where we wanted them. âThese things take time and I donât want to get it wrong.â He kissed the side of my face and whispered. âNever again.â
