accidentally landed in. âThatâs whatâs strange. And he wouldnât give me a chance to apologize.â
Jennifer looked at the clock on the wall of the classroom.
I took the hint and started walking her toward the door.
âAnyway,â I said, âIâm hoping you can help me find him.â
âMe? I didnât even get a good look at his face,â she said. She crinkled her forehead. âHow can I help you find him?â
âActually,â I answered, âI need your dadâs help. You see, I know the kidâs first name is Carlos, and he went into room 225 at eleven oâclock. Maybe, with that information, your dad could get me his class schedule. Itâd be even better if I could get his full name and address. That way I can track him down and give his money back. I know the teachers here are all hooked up on computers andââ
âAncient computers,â Jennifer said, âdonated by a company that was going to throw them out. And Dadâs not too good with computers. He relies on Jason to help him.â
âWell,â I said, âmaybe your dad can figure out how to get into the system.â
She kept frowning as we walked into the busy hallway.
âWhy not just wait for him after class?â she asked.
âHis class is way across the school. Iâll never get there in time to catch him coming out. Watching him go in made me late to class today. Besides,â I added, âheâs got these friends. More like bodyguards. It doesnât seem like theyâre going to let me get close to him at school. And he keeps running away. If I can talk to him at his home...â
âBoy,â she said, âthese days people are pretty strict about privacy things. Iâm not sure my dad would even give you information about another student.â
I should have thought of that. After all, the school had a metal detector and security guards.
Jennifer stopped. She smiled suddenly, erasing the crinkle of her forehead. âI have an idea,â she said. âThe perfect reason for Dad to try to find out more about Carlos.â
I didnât have an idea, so I just waited for her to tell me hers.
âYou didnât catch him, right?â she asked. âThat means heâs really fast.â
âI was getting close,â I said, unable to stifle my pride. âIf the cops hadnât shown upââ
âSure,â she said. âSure.â She giggled while I sulked.
âSomeone that fast could help our track team,â she said. âWith you and Carlos running with Jason, weâd have a serious shot at winning. Once I tell Dad about Carlos, Iâm sure Dad will look up his last name and address.â
âThatâs a great idea,â I said.
I dug into my back pocket for the slip of paper that had Carlosâs room number on it. Folding the paper, I handed it to Jennifer. She put it into the front pocket of her jeans.
Thatâs when someone pushed me so hard from behind that I almost fell into the lockers.
I turned around.
Jason glared at me. He held up his fists, ready to take a punch at me.
âLeave my girl alone,â he said.
âHuh?â I said.
âI saw you give her a note.â He stepped toward me. I didnât back away. Jennifer stepped between us.
âJason,â she said, âdonât. He didnât give me that kind of note. And Iâve been telling you for a long time that Iâm not your girl.â
Jennifer turned to me. âLeave,â she said. âIâll handle this.â
I didnât want to leave. I wasnât a chicken. Nobody was going to scare me away.
âJust leave,â she said. âPlease? If you guys fight, youâll both get kicked off the track team. And you guys are the one-two runners. The team needs you. My dad needs you.â
âSure,â I finally said.
I left them there, arguing.
