bawling.â
âYouâre entitled,â I said. I took her hand. âIâll talk to these guys about your parents. Maybe they can do something. They owe us, right?â
âThank you.â She leaned forward and kissed me. âIâll see you in an hour.â As I turned to go she said, âI love you too, Michael.â
I turned back. âI know. I still donât believe it, but I know.â
A fter showering I dressed in some of the new clothes they had brought, then lay back on my bed, waiting for them to come for us. Ostin was still snoring like a bandsaw. As I lay there listening to him, all I could think about was what Taylor had said about never going back. She was right. I suppose I hadnât thought as much about it as she had because I wasnât really giving up anything. Everyone I cared about was here.
About ten minutes later someone knocked on our door. âMr. Vey, Mr. Liss. Itâs time for the reception.â
âCâmon, Ostin,â I said, sitting up. âItâs time.â
âTime for what?â he said groggily.
âTo go to the reception.â
He yawned loudly, then rolled over. âThereâd better be food at this thing.â
*Â *Â *Â
By the time we walked out of our room, everyone else was already standing in the hallway. Zeus, McKenna, Abigail, and Ian were talking to Tanner.
Taylor walked up to me and took my hand. She looked like she was feeling a little better. Or at least she was doing a better job of hiding her pain. âDid you see Tanner?â she asked.
âI talked to him this afternoon.â
âI hardly recognized him,â she said. âHe doesnât even look like the same person.â
âThatâs exactly what I said.â
Just then Tanner walked over to us. âHey, Taylor. Mike.â
âI was just saying how great you look,â Taylor said.
âYou look great too. Want to go out?â
Taylor grinned. âFlattered, but youâll have to ask my boyfriend.â
âThatâs not going to happen,â I said.
âEven after I dropped those helicopter gunships?â
âEven,â I said.
He laughed. âLike my father used to say, if you donât ask, the answer is always no.â He leaned in closer and his voice lowered. âHave you guys seen Zeus?â
âWe see him every day,â I said.
âI mean, post shower. He, like, doesnât stink. He smells good.â
âWeâll go right over and sniff him,â Taylor said wryly.
Just then a voice from the end of the hall said, âYou all clean up nicely.â We all looked over to see Joel walking up the corridor. âAre we missing anyone?â
âJust me,â Grace said, walking out of her room.
âGrace!â Tessa shouted. The girls hugged. âWhere have you been?â Tessa asked.
âYou know, after these guys took down the academy, I thought Iâd come here for a while. How about you? I hear youâve been hanging out in the jungle.â
âItâs true,â Tessa said proudly. âIâve been eating mashed tree larvae and fishing for piranha.â
âThatâs crazy,â Grace said.
âSeeing you is crazy,â Tessa replied.
Like Tanner, Grace also looked different to me. Lighter. Healthier. I suppose being away from Hatch had that effect on people.
âThe reunions are just beginning,â Joel said. âLetâs go to the party.â
I was pleased to hear that the event had been upgraded from a reception to a party. We followed Joel back down the hallway, through a set of double doors, then outside to another building. The night air was cool and filled with the song of crickets.
âIs there food at this thing?â Ostin asked.
âWhat kind of a celebration would it be without food?â Joel replied. âI promise, there will be more than you can eat, including what may be the best
