she kept chewing.
âGood.â Sydney gave a short nod of satisfaction. âNow back to this trip. What was the hotel like?â
âBeautiful. Clean. Expensive. Great service. And the hotel restaurant was pretty good too,â JJ said. âWe had dinner there a few nights. They had the most amazing amuse-bouche, Sydney. You would have loved it. If you and Hayden go to Alberta, you should stay there.â
âWell, itâs unlikely that Hayden and I would be staying at a hotel together anytime soon since we arenât married yet,â Sydney said pointedly. âSpeaking of which . . .â
âHave we got to the part about who was in her room yet?â Lissandra asked, showing up at the door.
JJ rolled her eyes, wondering how she had not heard her other sister enter the house.
âJust about,â Sydney said, pursing her lips.
JJ put a large forkful of strudel in her mouth. She would pay for this later with a few extra laps around the block, but she needed the time.
âMm-mm-mm,â Lissandra said, shaking her head as she folded her arms. âLook at her buying time. Syd, you better take that plate from her.â
Sydney shrugged. âThereâs not much left anyway.â
JJ put down the fork and faced her fate. âGuys, like I said, it wasnât a big deal. I had just had dinner. A friend was making sure I got back to my room okay.â
âWhat friend?â Lissandra pressed.
âA friend,â JJ pressed back, glaring.
âAnyone we know?â Sydney asked.
âYou donât know all my friends,â JJ said defensively.
âEspecially not lately,â Lissandra muttered.
âLook, JJ, if youâre dating somebody, thatâs great,â Sydney said, taking on a more coaxing tone. âThatâs nothing to be ashamed of. We just donât understand why you would hide that from us.â
âUnless youâre sleeping with that someone,â Lissandra said.
âIâm not sleeping with anyone,â JJ said more loudly than she intended. She glared at Lissandra. âThough I canât see how that would offend your nonexistent values.â
âHey, I never claimed to be anything other than what I am,â Lissandra said sharply. âYou know I am all for a good time, no matter how it comes around. Iâm not the one who used to walk around here holier than everyone else, condemning everyone else for their mess, acting like she had an alarm system on her chastity beltââ
âOkay, Lissandra, thatâs enough,â Sydney cut in.
âLook, I am a grown woman. Who I see and what I do is my business. I donât have to share that with you. But if I am dating someone and it is serious, I will let you know. Again, for the record, I am not sleeping with anyone. So, yes, Lissandra, my chastity belt is firmly in place,â she snapped. âAt this point I am not sure if you could even find yours.â
âMaybe itâs with the man who was in your room last night,â Lissandra quipped.
Sydney glared at Lissandra. âEnough!â
âI am done talking about this,â JJ said, folding her arms. She could not believe she had let her sisters railroad her like this. Sometimes she wondered if they were for her or against her.
âI agree,â Sydney said. âLetâs drop this whole thing for now. Thereâs something more pressing that we need to talk about.â
âSheree?â JJ asked, glad to steer away from the topic of her love life.
âYes,â Sydney said. She took a deep sigh. âNow I know I said that we would talk about this together, but things have been happening really quickly andââ
Sydney was interrupted by the sound of the doorbell.
âWhoâs that?â JJ asked, getting up.
âI donât know,â Lissandra said. âI wasnât expecting anyone.â
The doorbell went off again. Several more times in a row,
