at his phone for five minutes, he gave up, sensing defeat. She would probably avoid the coffee shop now in order to dodge him.
He pulled out of the lot and drove back to school. Although he didnât have class this afternoon, he could get some studying in before rehearsal. As he walked through the doors to the library, his phone buzzed.
Iâd love to.
His heart lurched into his throat. She hadnât dodged him. She wanted to go out on a date. He couldnât believe his eyes.
After checking the number to make sure it was, in fact, from Samantha, he responded: Brilliant!
She wouldnât get the Doctor Who reference, but it was confident. Then he added, Iâll call you tomorrow and weâll figure out details.
Sitting down in a study nook, he realized that he wouldnât be focusing on books at all. His brain raced with ideas for dates. He needed it to be perfect.
Chapter 4
S am stood in front of the mirror and scooped her hair up, then let it fall again around her shoulders. She turned from side to side. Glancing down at her jeans, she had no idea if she was dressed okay for her date with Free. Heâd said to dress casual, but then added something about wearing clothes she wouldnât care about getting messy. He wouldnât tell her what the date entailed, though.
He seemed really nervous the couple of times they talked, so she didnât press him. She was happy that heâd used her number to ask her out. When they left each other at the coffee shop, sheâd been worried that he wasnât going to call. With a quick swipe of lip gloss, she decided that her outfit would have to do. If Free showed up wearing something fancier, she could change.
The phone rang, and the doorman let her know Free was here. She told him to send Free up. She snapped a hair tie on her wrist in case she needed to put her hair up later and waited nervously by the door. She couldnât remember the last time sheâd been this anxious over a date.
Maybe it was because Free seemed so different from the guys she usually dated. While Jess had been right in thinking she sometimes chose guys who would make her dad crazy, they had mostly been of the bad boy variety. Free didnât fit that mold at all. Although she didnât know much about him, she knew he was sweet.
Any guy who would dress up in crazy costumes to help his brother had to be nice. And given the costumes heâd chosen, he mustâve been a geek of the highest order. He dressed as characters sheâd barely heard of.
When the elevator dinged, she opened her door to look for him. She didnât know what sheâd expected, but he managed to surprise her. He got off the elevator carrying a bouquet of roses. From what she could see under his plain jacket, he appeared to be wearing normal jeans, which didnât tell her much because he also wore the same red Converses heâd worn when he was Doctor Who.
He looked up and when their eyes met, his face broke into a wide smile. âHi.â
âHi. I hope you didnât have a hard time finding the place.â
âNope. Your directions were excellent. I actually donât live too far from here.â He held out the bouquet. âThese are for you.â
She accepted them and brought them to her face for a deep sniff. âThank you. Theyâre beautiful.â She took a step back into her apartment. âCome in.â
He followed her and closed the door behind him.
âIâll put these in water.â As she moved around the kitchen, she continued to talk. âYou still havenât said where weâre going, so I hope Iâm dressed okay.â
He strode into the kitchen with his jacket open. He, too, wore a T-shirt with his jeans. His dark blue T-shirt read H ERMITS U NITE ! in white letters.
âInteresting shirt. Are you sure itâs all right to leave your cave to be out in public?â
He ran a hand over the front of his shirt.
