kitchen is to the left right over there.” He continued down the hall with Heidi in tow. “The bathroom is on the right, and this…is the second bedroom for rent. Mine is the closed door across from it.”
She cleared her throat, nodded, and then stepped around him to take a look at the room offered. She touched the top of the dresser that was inside and asked, “So the rent is seven hundred including utilities, right?”
“That’s right.”
“Okay,” She turned around to face him and smiled. “I just moved here, and obviously I need a place to stay, but first can I ask why you’re looking to share this place? There weren’t too many listings for roommates wanted while I was skimming through the apartment ads.”
Nathan shrugged. “Just covering my ass. I started a new job recently and I figured the help couldn’t hurt. I’ll understand if you need to look elsewhere of course.” There hadn’t been too many responses, and so far he had his pick between a drunk, a druggie, and some freaky goth dude. No thanks! She’d definitely been his best candidate, but at the same time he had assumed his new roomie would be a guy, for some reason. So when Heidi showed up, he was both pleasantly surprised and a little wary because of the attraction. Another one of his rules was that you didn’t fuck who you lived with.
“It’s not that. I’ve been here a couple of weeks, and I’m crashing on a friend’s couch, so I’m kind of desperate.” She dazzled him with another smile. “I also have the deposit and first month ready if this works out, but I’m also cautious.” There she went biting that bottom lip again. “I’m clean, but I’ll give you a chance to run a criminal background check on me and I’ll do the same on you. So you know I’m not a crazy. You can never be too careful nowadays.”
“That’s the truth,” he said, thinking about the other candidates so far. “I’m not a crazy either by the way.” He held back a chuckle.
“Good to know.” She breathed a sigh of relief. “It should only take you a couple of days. We can meet up at Frank’s coffee shop down the block same time next week, and if all goes well…”
“You realize we’re alone, right? If I was a cuckoo, you’d be in trouble right now.” He stood by the door and watched her stiffen, but he was only playing around, and he liked her more and more with each passing second. She was obviously a smart one.
“I have a friend waiting for me downstairs.”
“That’s good, but I’m just sayin’.” He smiled. “It’s a good thing I’m not a nut. Can you move in next weekend?”
“If all goes well, then yes.” She nodded and stepped forward with her hand outstretched again. “You’ve got a deal, player.”

In the present, Nathan smiled as he thought of that night so long ago. Heidi had moved in as planned, he’d obviously cleared the criminal check, and they had become great friends almost instantly. Heidi was sweet, a looker, and a lot of fun to be around. About six months into their living arrangement, they knew everything about each other and he fell in love a little more with each passing day, but he was afraid to make his move. He hadn’t been ready to settle down, not until recently. The meaningless trysts left him feeling hollow, and he needed more.
Heidi was it.
Nathan loved watching the seductive sway of Heidi’s hips as she led them out of the bar to grab a cab. He’d been fighting his attraction for her for far too long, and there was just something about the fire in those piercing green eyes when he’d finally met up with her tonight that had triggered his emotions. Not only that, but after seeing her touch herself two weeks ago, he had to have her once and for all. He hoped to God he wasn’t making a mistake. “Just promise me one thing, Heidi—”
“What’s that?”
“Promise this won’t change things between us. We can’t let it get awkward, because the thought of losing you
