murmured. âPardon me. I have slight congestion. Never mind. Iâm calling about your mummy.â
Melanieâs arms prickled with a rush of goose bumps. Something was wrong. She didnât know what, but she could feel it all over. âYes?â she quavered.
âYour mummy had an obligation . We had a deal. She gave her word, but she broke her promise. That wasnât very nice at all, was it?â The sticky voice laughed, like he was joking.
Melanieâs hand shook. This was a prank call. He was a perv or something, and she shouldnât listen to him. He was bad. She slowly began to lower the receiver toward the cradle.
âDonât!â the voice roared.
Melanie, heart quaking, obeyed.
âListen, you little half-wit,â the stranger hissed. âDonât you dare hang up on me! Your parents made a deal. I let your mother have fourteen years with you in the Realm of Flesh, but when I said it was time you both had to return. Well, Mummy came back to Half World like she was told, but she thought she could leave you behind and I wouldnât be able to get to you. But if you donât come to Half World Iâm going to hurt your mummy, arenât I? Iâm going to make her scream, and Iâll call you. Wherever you are. And youâll have to listen.â
âPlease,â Melanie said hoarsely. She couldnât think. He was mad, obviously. But could he really have her mother?
âOf course I have her,â the creepy voice replied conversationally. âLet me call her over.â His voice dropped conspiratorially. âShe hasnât been herself. Not that she was ever much to begin with. But if she was always half of what she was, maybe now sheâs a quarter.â The sound of rustling.
âFumiko!â He whistled encouragingly.
Melanie heard him calling her mother like she was a dog.
âCâmere! Come on! Thatâs a good girl. Someone wants to talk to you. Here. Take the phone. Thatâs it. Now say âhello.ââ
âHello,â a soft voice said.
Melanieâs hand shook. âMum?â she whispered. âMummy, is that you?â
âHello,â the familiar voice repeated, in the exact same tone. âHello.â
âSay something else!â Melanie heard the sticky male voice command. âSay, âDarling Melanie, come and save me.ââ
âDarling Melanie, come and save me,â her motherâs monotone parroted.
Hope withered inside Melanie. It was true. A madman had her mother.
âGive it back,â Melanie heard the grotesque man say. Something clacked and banged.
âNo.â Her motherâs voice was weak. âMelanie. Stay awaââ
A loud thud.
Melanieâs heart stopped.
âI guess thereâs a little life left in her yet,â the repulsive voice chuckled. âSurprising olâ gal, she is. Where was I? Ahhh, yes. If you ever want to see your mummy again, and so on and so forth, leave the house immediately and proceed to the Cassiar Tunnel. Enter the tunnel that is farthest west. I really donât know where youâll end up if you go through the wrong Gate. So PAY ATTENTION!â he roared.
âWest side,â Melanie sobbed.
âGood girl,â the vile voice soothed. âYouâll find there are numerous doors lining the inside wall. Go through door number four! Get it? Door four! Your prize-winning entry into Half World!â
âP-please,â Melanie quavered, âdonât hurt her.â
âP-please, donât hurt her,â he mimicked in a falsetto. His voice dropped low. âYou better get your fat ass over here. You better start RUNNING!â
Melanie slammed the phone into the cradle. She looked frantically about the room. What should she do? Her mum was kidnapped! She needed help. Adult help. It was a trap. She couldnât go to the Cassiar Tunnel by herself. Her parents were caught up in
