Pivoted and perfectly balanced, he extended his leg chest high. Re-tucking his leg, Dekker placed his foot back on the floor.
He looked at Alexis. “Now, give it a try.”
Alexis unzipped her hoodie, stripped it off, and tossed it in the corner. She resumed her fighting stance and mimicked Dekker’s movement. Well, tried to mimic his movement. It turned out that college was a long time ago. What happened to muscle memory kicking in?
    “Again,” Dekker demanded.
She repeated the movement until her legs begin to shake.
“Now, I want you to do a spinning side kick. Like this.”
Dekker approached the bag, muscles bunched. He fisted his hands and raised them. Dekker lifted his back leg, spun one hundred and eighty degrees, and smashed his foot into the bag. It creaked on its chain as it swung toward the ceiling.
    “Wow,” she said without thinking.
    “Well, you seem easily impressed.”
“Not really …” She worked in a bull pen full of men—most of them in excellent physical shape. And if that weren’t enough, she could just go down to the fire station. But Dekker. His movements were so fluid. As if it didn’t take any exertion to rattle that bag nearly off its chain. But for as much as she was admiring him, Dekker seemed disdainful again.
Smiling coyly, she continued, “I’m not easily anything unless I wanna be.”
Ignoring her attempted seduction, Dekker put his hands on her shoulders and turned her to the bag. “Remember to look over your left shoulder as you extend that leg.”
Alexis shook her head, positioning herself in front of the bag. “I’ll give it a try.”
“No, you’ll give it your all,” Dekker commanded.
Turning her back on the bag, Alexis bounced on her toes, preparing herself.
“You’ve got to see who or what you are kicking, darlin’. That would be the point of looking over your shoulder. Your body, well …” Dekker eyed her up and down, and this time he appeared to like what he saw.
Warmth coursed through her. Not the sweaty, workout kind. The other kind. The kind she definitely shouldn’t be feeling.
Then Dekker was back to business. “We’ll work on your body later. Right now, you’ve got to keep your body aligned with your target.” Dekker wrapped his hands around Alexis’ waist. Her breath caught at the unexpected contact.
“When you get ready to kick, I want you to move your hips like this.” Alexis could feel Dekker’s groin pressing into her stomach as he twisted her hips. She tensed, trying to pull away from the contact. Dekker pulled her closer. His breath was against her ear as he whispered, “Let go. Trust me.”
Alexis forced herself to relax, letting her body mold to Dekker’s. She spun in his arms and extended her leg, feeling the satisfying snap as her foot hit the bag.
“Now, see? That wasn’t so hard.”
Alexis backed away, needing distance between herself and Dekker. “This is great, but I was hoping for something more practical on the streets.”
“Patience, my dear. Now, I want ten spinning side kicks in quick order.”
While she was greatly improving her technique, she wasn’t getting any actual information on Dekker. Perhaps she needed to change tactics. Meeting Dekker’s gaze, she challenged, “If I do, will you show me some of your patented moves?”
The temperature in the room dropped a good ten degrees as Dekker’s eyes hardened. “Either do the lesson as instructed, or find another instructor.”

The woman’s cheeks flushed red as she breathed in and out through her nose. This one liked to be in control. But he sensed that she yearned to have someone take it from her.
“Well?” he asked. “Which is it going to be?”
With newfound vigor, Lexie pounded out her ten spinning side kicks, making contact with the bag every time. She was a quick learner.
He backed away to give her some room to catch her breath.
“Look, I’ve seen your fights,” she said between pants. “And I’ve read the stuff you
