mind for yourself,” he said turning off the jeep and opening his door.
Zane had driven them to The Noble Barn, his grandmother’s bookstore that had been closed for a couple months because of her illness. She stared up at the old red brick building on main street with the green awnings and brightly lit window filled with books and posters. It was her favorite place to go, but for some reason, she didn’t feel like getting out of the jeep.
Now, just hours after meeting a new guy at school, she was meeting his mother. Who was a witch. Yeah, this was no big deal.
Zane opened her car door and looked at her quizzically. “Are you an old fashioned girl Sarah? You like your men to open doors for you?”
Sarah giggled weakly and hopped out. “I’m strong enough to push a door open. I just happen to be a little nervous about meeting your mom is all. No biggee.”
Zane smiled and pulled her in for a hug. “Oh, that’s sweet. Now stop being a wimp.”
Sarah swallowed as Zane pulled her through the front doors of Agnes Adam’s book store and café, The Noble Barn. She’d always loved wandering the aisles of the little book store. Everyone in town usually drove into Harrisburg to shop at the mall and the book stores there, but she preferred this one. It was so peaceful and calm. She always left the store feeling ten times better than when she’d arrived.
“I’m sorry about your grandmother by the way,” she said quietly, reaching out to touch Zane’s arm.
Zane reached over and put his hand on top of hers, filling them both with warmth. “Alzheimer’s is no joke. My mom’s hoping to pull her out of it, but witches are humans too.”
Sarah’s mouth fell open in shock. “Are you telling me your grandmother, Agnes Adams was, is a witch?” she demanded stopping in front of a table filled with children’s books about dinosaurs.
Zane looked surprised. “You seriously didn’t know? A witch can always tell another witch. I knew the second you walked through the door. Huh ,” he said looking at her like she was defective.
Sarah sniffed and turned away. “I block out as much as I can of that stuff. But I will say that I always felt so good when I came here. And Agnes always gave me free cookies and told me the most interesting stories about Ireland where her parents were from. I always wished she was my grandma,” she said softly.
Zane pulled her in for a hug and kissed the top of her head. “Release me from the friend zone and she’s yours.”
Sarah laughed and realized she was leaning her head on Zane’s chest. “Knock it off Zane.”
Zane laughed and turned around as if he was looking at someone. A tall, beautiful blond woman of about forty-five walked around a book shelf and came towards them, smiling warmly and holding out a hand to Zane.
“Zane, who is this gorgeous creature? Trust you to find the prettiest girl in town on your first day of school,” she said coming closer and looking curiously at Sarah.
As she reached out a hand to shake Sarah’s, she paused and looked like she felt a strong shock. Her smile wavered slightly, but then came back bigger and brighter.
“Oh, you’re a strong one, aren’t you? Well come in and have a treat on the house,” she said turning around and waving towards the café counter.
Sarah winced and looked at Zane worriedly. Zane shook his head and smiled encouragingly. “Relax,” he ordered and pulled her towards the muffins Gretchen was already putting on plates.
“Coffee, hot chocolate or tea?” Gretchen asked looking at her expectantly.
“Hot chocolate sounds good,” Sarah said, trying to smile.
Gretchen poured their drinks and leaned on the counter as she and Zane started eating their hazelnut, caramel and white chocolate muffins.
“T his is amazing,” Sarah whispered in awe before taking a sip of her hot chocolate.
Zane smiled proudly at his mom. “My mom has won awards for baking. We used to live in Denver where she had a successful
