find her, or sheâll probably come back on her own.â
âJosh is right, Mrs. Kline,â Ned offered. âThe police will do what they can, and Nancy and I will do what we can, too.â
Karen Kline gave Ned a small, warm smile.âIâm really grateful for your help.â She reached out for her husbandâs arm. âIâd like to go home now, Allen. If Rachel does call, Iâd like one of us to answer instead of the maid.â
Allen nodded sadly. âWeâre not accomplishing anything here,â he agreed. âGood night, kids. Thanks for your help, and Iâm sorry about your accident, Nancy.â
Nancy managed a smile. âDonât worry about me. Please, before you go, could I just ask you a couple of questions about Dennis Harper?â
Mr. and Mrs. Kline seemed to become tense at the mention of Dennisâs name. âDo you know him?â Nancy went on. Ned raised a hand ever so slightly, telling her to go easy.
âNot well,â Mr. Kline answered after reflecting a moment. âHe certainly isnât the kind of boy weâd expect Rachel to like. Heâs got one of those punk haircuts and a pretty tough attitude to match it.â
Nancy explained that she and Ned were concentrating on locating him. âDo you have any idea where he lives?â
âYou think Rachelâs with him?â Josh asked before his mother could answer.
âWell, of course, we donât know,â Ned explained. âStill, it may not be a coincidence that heâs not around and Rachelâs missing.â
Deep furrows showed in Mrs. Klineâs forehead. âYouâd better tell the police to track him down, Allen.â
âIâll do that right away,â Mr. Kline agreed. âIf she is with him, she could be in trouble. I knew we should never have let her go out with him!â With that, Allen Kline disappeared inside the house to use a telephone. Mrs. Kline and Josh quickly followed him.
Ned and Nancy remained at their poolside table. He turned to her. âAny idea who pushed you?â he asked.
âNot a clue,â she said, laughing. âThereâs a pattern here, though. Whenever weâre around Rachelâs friends, someone tries to scare us off.â
âWhat do you think it means?â Ned asked.
Before Nancy could answer, Beth, Jessica, and Mike came toward their table, towels slung around their necks. There was another guy with them, someone Nancy didnât recognize.
âThis is Peter Henley,â Beth said. âI donât think youâve met him. Peter, this is Nancy Drew and Ned Nickerson. Theyâre friends of Josh Klineâs from school.â
âHi,â Peter said with a smile as the four of them pulled up chairs and sat down at the table.
âNed and I went to Sound Performance today, looking for Dennis,â she said to Mike Rasmussen. âSorry we missed you.â
âIâm off a couple of days this week because of graduation,â Mike replied.
âMr. Lindenbaum said he fired Dennis because some stereo equipment turned up missing,â Ned put in.
Mike looked at Beth, Jessica, and Peter before meeting Nedâs gaze and nodding. âIâm not surprised,â he said bitterly.
âWhat do you mean?â Nancy asked.
âYouâd better tell them. Itâs all right. I know how you feel,â Jessica said with a sigh.
For a moment Mike hesitated. Then he shrugged and muttered, âOkay.â His eyes met Nancyâs. âI was really in love with Rachel. Maybe I still am, a little. When she broke up with me to go out with Dennis, it hurt a lot. Then when I figured Harper was ripping off Sound Performance, I didnât know what to do. I wanted to tell Rachel, but I thought she wouldnât believe me.â
âWhy did you think he was stealing?â Nancy asked, leaning forward a little in her chair. âDid you see Dennis take
