emotional
level. Maybe one day when I meet the right person it will happen to me. It must
be really nice .”
“Well,
I envy the way you come so hard. I think your orgasms are even stronger now
than ever before. Why do you think that is? What changed?”
“I
don’t really know. But maybe it’s because I haven’t been with anyone since I
moved to New York,” Kara admitt ed. “You know I can’t
afford any whispers of what I really like to spring up there. It’d ruin me.”
“You’re
going to fuck up and tell on yourself if you don’t put New York out of your
mind while you’re here. You’ve got plenty of time to think about it when you go back.”
“I
know.” Kara winced. “New York no longer exists while I’m in Atlanta.”
“Thank
you!” Jennifer gave Kara a loud smooch on the cheek. “I’m tired of hearing
about it anyway. While you’re here I want my old Kara back. The girl who taught me the proper
way to kiss and do other unmentionable things. I really miss her. Sometimes I secretly
wish—even though I’m very happy for you these days—that you would have never
left. The Atlanta party scene isn’t the same without you. If you would only
give up N ew York and come back I’m sure you could get
your old job back at the advertising agency. Then we could be together every
day, not to mention sleep together every night like we used to.”
Kara
held her silence under Jennifer’s intense gaze. How could she te ll her dearest friend in the world that she didn’t ever
want things to ever go back to the way they had once been. Yeah, college had been fun, but she was
looking toward the future now.
“Do
you ever think about coming back to Atlanta permanently?” Jennife r wouldn’t let it go.
Kara
shook her head. “I can’t ever move back. Not if I want to maintain the life
I’ve built for myself. And I don’t want to ever go back to working in
advertising. I’d rather live in a cardboard box first.”
“I
can’t blame you,” Jennif er admitted. “It does get
pretty monotonous at times.”
“I’m
glad you understand.”
Jennifer
patted Kara’s thigh. “Since I tried to get you to come back and you shot me
down, we might as well discuss something I’ve been avoiding talking to you
about.”
“Okay. ” Kara couldn’t help noticing the subtle influx of tension
inserting itself between them.
Jennifer
swallowed. “So here’s the thing, and I don’t mean to be getting all up in your
business, but I’ll never understand why you instigated a meeting with Evan whi le I was away in Chicago on business this past weekend. We
had plenty of time to get you into a script doing something a little less
intimidating than what this one’s calling for.”
Kara
let out a frustrated sigh. “Although I haven’t read it yet I have no p roblem with whatever they’re asking for. I’m a big girl.”
“I
know that. But I’ll never understand why you went against what I said for you
to say and do. You even lied about having had sex with men before. And I can
hardly believe you’ve led him to think y ou’re an anal
sex queen. Just because you like to do certain things with women doesn’t mean
you’ll like doing those same things with a man.”
It
took a monumental effort on Kara’s part to suppress her growing irritation. “I
know you don’t understand, Jennif er. But I accept
full responsibility for my lying and any consequences stemming from me lying.
He wouldn’t have agreed to give me an audition without me first leading him to
believe I can do this.”
“I
get that, but why didn’t you wait to let me introduce y ou to him?” Sadness marred Jennifer’s countenance and her shoulders
slumped. “I thought I was your best friend in the world. You’ve changed so much
from the person I used to know. It’s like you now get off on being secretive
and doing things all on your ow n. We used to do
things together . Remember? It was always us against the
world.”
“You are my best
