two. I want real friends. I wantâ¦â
Tanner flashed in his mind, and he put his hands on his stomach.
âYou okay?â Giles slowed the car. âDo you need me to pull over?â
âI just need to eat,â Aaron lied.
âFood coming right up. I see the sign up ahead. What would you rather, a burger or chicken sandwich?â
âBurger. Big one. With bacon and cheese.â Aaron tried to fumble for his wallet, but Giles waved him away.
âI got this, birthday boy. Stand down.â
Warmth flooded the hollow place inside Aaron. âThanks. Youâreâ¦really nice.â
Giles flashed him a smile that made everything inside Aaron hum, but when Aaron smiled back, Giles looked away.
He ordered Aaron a full meal: burger, fries, Frosty and bottle of water, getting himself a pop. âI got a large order of fries, figuring we could split it. Sound okay?â
âYeah.â Aaron took a bite of his burger and felt his soul realign. âOh my God, thank you so much. Youâre saving my life.â
âPretty easy save, and at value meal prices.â Giles sipped his drink and grabbed a fry as he navigated onto the road. âWhere to now? You want to head home or cruise around?â
âI donât want to go home.â Aaron scowled at the streets of Anoka. âNot like thereâs anywhere else to go, though.â
âSure there is. Iâd say we could get pizza, but we bought all this food. Youâre a bit drunk to bowl, and thereâs no way either of us can get in a bar, but a few of the parks are still open. Plus thereâs always the lake. We could midnight picnic.â
A midnight picnic sounded fun, especially with Giles. âAre you sure you donât care? I donât want to keep you.â
âWhat is it, exactly, you think youâre keeping me from?â
Aaron shrugged. âI donât know. Stuff?â
âIn Oak Grove?â Giles sighed as he headed north. âHonest to God, college has got to improve things. My friend Mina is going to Saint Timothy too. She says itâs going to be the same, and oh my fucking God, no .â
âI hadnât thought that far ahead. College seems so scary.â
âWhy? Whatâs to be scared of?â
âEverything.â Aaron felt the burger leak around his lips and fumbled for a napkin. âTomorrow my dadâs coming, and I have to have a college and a reason for picking it. A reason heâll accept. Otherwise heâll choose for me, and Iâm sure to hate it.â
âSo pick one first. Grab one at random, see what theyâre known for, find the thing that will make your dad happy and tell him thatâs the reason you chose it. Rush out your app, and boom, youâre done.â
Could it actually be so simple? âIs this friend of yours from A-H, the one whoâs going with you?â
âYeah, weâre being lame and using the buddy system. So I guess I am scared enough to take my BFF security blanket with me. But mostly it worked out. Sheâs going to be pre-med, and they have a great program. Pre-med, pre-law and music. Thatâs Timothy.â
âHas to be nice, though, having her along.â
Giles waggled his eyebrow. âYou could go to Mankato with Colton.â He laughed when Aaron groaned. âStill blows my mind that you donât like him. Why do you hang out so much if you canât stand him?â
Aaron tried to swallow the truth with his fries, but he and alcohol didnât make much for censorship. âHe was the only one who showed interest in being my friend when I moved here. So I went with it.â
Giles looked at him as if heâd grown an extra head. âShut up. No way.â
âNo way what?â
âNo way everyone else at A-H snubbed you.â
Was this a trick question? Aaron eyed Giles carefully. âUm, yeah. Nobody talked to me.â
âYou hang out with the
