pleasure.
    “Fuck, Reed.”
Carlos slowed his breathing as the
world swam back into focus. He found Reed on his knees in front of him. Reed’s
hands were pressed over his knees, and his eyes were wide and vulnerable with
emotion.
“I meant what I said, Carlos. After
you, I’ve never taken another mate. I belong to you and will always belong to
you. Distance and time doesn’t change anything.”
The words pouring out of Reed were
the last words Carlos expected and wanted to hear. He couldn’t risk his heart
again. Carlos knew he wouldn’t survive.
“Shut up. Stop lying to me.” Carlos
gripped his hair, but Reed didn’t stop.
Ignoring his grip, Reed slid his
palms upward and rested them on Carlos’s upper thighs.
“No matter how long it takes for
you to forgive me, I’ll wait.”
Carlos broke. He was ripped into
two.
“You’re playing a sick game, Reed.”
Anger flickered in the other man’s
eyes.
“I offered you my life and you
rejected it. Tell me what else I can do to prove myself to you and I’ll do it.”
“You can start by telling us what
Jax is planning.”
    It wasn’t Carlos who spoke.
Pissed at the presence of an unwanted
audience, Carlos jerked his head to growl at Don, “Fuck off, why are you idiots
here? Didn’t I tell you to wait outside the house?”
    The enforcer looked unperturbed,
amused even. Beside him, Derrick was bright red. Terrence cleared his throat,
his dark eyes assessing and contemplating the scene before him.
“Well, boss, we were worried for a
second about the interesting sounds coming from your backyard.” Derrick bit his
lower lip. “ Your… uh pleasure reverberated through the
pack bonds.”
Reed calmly got off his knees,
brushing leaves and dirt off him. Carlos mutely grabbed the other man’s wrist,
making sure he wasn’t going anywhere.
“Don’t get me wrong, boss. It felt
good. Really good.”
    “Just shut up, Derrick,” Terrence
said, and the big wolf wisely did.
Carlos expected Reed to bolt, to
put up a fight, but his mate only gave his enforcers a steady look before
looking at him. “I’ll tell you everything I know.”

    Chapter Four

Reed talked. He didn’t leave out a
thing. The New Haven wolves probably knew by now Jax and the rest of the Starr
Mountain Pack had formed a blockade just outside the town, preventing any wolf
or human from entering or leaving.
Whether Carlos had forgiven him or
not, Reed no longer cared. He knew Carlos had changed over the years, but some
aspects of the man hadn’t, and the Alpha could hold a grudge for a long time.
Unfortunately, Reed no longer had the luxury of time.
    Don whistled after Reed finished
explaining what Jax intended. “The bastard never wanted to settle this cleanly.
He always had the intention to slaughter us.”
    “Sounds just like Jax,” Derrick
agreed. The Beta looked glum. “They said my father was a good and honorable
Alpha once, but those days are gone.”
“We won’t be going without a
fight,” Terrence pointed out.
    He listened to what Carlos’s
enforcers were saying. While the Alpha of any pack ultimately made the final
decisions, it seemed Carlos still listened to the advice of his Betas. Only
Carlos hadn’t spoken. While Reed knew he was paying attention to the conversation,
he felt the Alpha’s heated gaze on him.
A familiar frown was affixed on
Carlos’s handsome face and in the past, Reed would’ve gone up to him and kiss
the corners of his mouth just to see him smile again. It was no longer the past
though, and he had to face the consequences of the present.
“What will you do now, Reed?” Don
finally asked.
    “If I’m not a hostage, I’ll head
back to Jax and my pack.”
He saw Carlos’s eyes narrow at his
words.
“Why should we believe every word
this bastard has said? If he thinks we’re just going to let him crawl back to
his Alpha,” Terrence began.
“Either way, Jax is going to smell
Carlos’s scent on you, Reed. He’s going to
