says,â Frank replied.
Con began to read the girls their Miranda Rights once more. When he had finished and they had responded that they understood them, Con turned to the other cop. The officer opened the back door of the police cruiser and motioned the girls inside with a cock of his head.
âWhat are they being arrested for?â Joe asked.
âI canât tell you,â Con replied.
âHey, you canât just cart off my sister without telling us why!â Chet looked as if he was going to lose complete control of his temper.
âWhat do you mean you canât tell us?â Frank said. âYou canât arrest somebody without telling them why.â
âIâll tell them once we drive away,â Con said.
âWhy are you deliberately keeping the crime from the rest of us?â Chet asked. âThatâs my sister youâre taking to jail.â
Con looked pained. âI donât like being this way,â he said. âEspecially with you guys. But I have my orders.â
Con walked around the car and opened the passenger door. âIâm sorry,â he said as he got into the car.
After the police drove off with Callie and Iola, Tony Prito came jogging up to the group of dumbstruck boys.
âWhat was that all about?â he asked.
âI donât know,â Joe said angrily. âBut I plan to find out.â
âIâd better call my parents before we head off to the police station,â Chet said.
âGoing to the precinct house is a good idea,â Frank said. âBut I think Joe and I should go alone.â
âNo way!â Chet was steamed. âThey might be your girlfriends, but Iola is my sister.â
âI donât like the way this smells,â Frank said. âCon said heâs under orders not to let us in on whatâs going on, but Joe and I are regular visitors to the police station. We might be able to get more information if just the two of us go in there. A more personal approach might get them to loosen up a little.â
âMy brother is right.â Joe put a reassuring hand on Chetâs shoulder. âIf we all go in there, they might clam up. Let us see what we can dig up.â
âUh, what about school?â Tony asked sheepishly.
âYou two go call Chetâs folks and Callieâs parents. Then cover for us in class. Weâll contact you as soon as we know something.â
âIâm not too happy about this,â Chet said. âBut I guess you guys are right. Just donât let anything happen to my sister or Callie.â
âNever have,â Joe said as he began to walk toward his van.
âAnd never will,â added Frank.

When Frank and Joe arrived at the police station, they headed straight for the second floor. They figured that Con would try to get the girls through booking as quickly as possible; except for not cuffing the girls, he seemed quite preoccupied with procedure in this case. Their instincts proved correct; Callie and Iola were halfway through the fingerprinting process just as Frank and Joe ascended the stairs.
âJoe! Frank!â Iola shouted when she spotted the brothers. Joe and Frank headed straight for the girls.
âAre you two all right?â Frank asked.
âJust peachy,â Callie said, rolling her eyes.
Joe looked all around, surveying the situation. He saw Con at his desk as the girls were being ushered through the process by a uniformed female officer they had never met before. The woman did not seem interested in the presence of the Hardys; she appeared to want to get the booking process and paperwork finished.
âWhat did they arrest you for?â Joe asked.
âCon said it was forââ Callie began to say. However, before she could finish her sentence, a stern âEnoughâ that was shouted from across theroom cut off her words. The four teens looked across the room and
